Has anyone tried Tea of Japan?

Hello, all:

As seen here:

http://tea-of-japan.com

Stumbled upon this shop (while watching YouTube tea videos.) :D

They posted a few about tea preparation. Which means I'm going to watch. :D

Interesting:

All experiences, thoughts, and advice are welcome.

I've never tried them... but the matabei family seem to be Uji locals and have been making tea (matcha especially) for over 100 years...

I'm tempted to try some of their tea. I've just reordered some matcha from hibiki-an but after I've finished that I might pick up a matcha super premium or usucha super premium from here.

The other two are way out of my price range!

Probably grab a sencha too. Their pictures are nice at the very least!

Ah, then count me in!

Certainly worth at least a try.

Thank you for that little detail.

Pricey indeed.

But for a special occasion...

or just make one up.)

The naming and products look similar to hibiki-an. Run by same person?

I'm going to make an order from these guys, soon.

Looking at a middle grade match, a fukamushi sencha and a karigane houjicha. Will post my thoughts...

As for thes-du-japon.com, I've bought their teapots and some of their sencha. With every teapot order they also sent 10g sencha sample pouches.

- Shizuoka, Fuji (Kôshun) : Got 10g sample pouch, really loved it. Probably one of the best sencha I've tried at this price.

- Kagoshima, Kirishima (Saemidori) : Also got 10g sample. Nice tea overall. Moderate umami. Love its long aftertaste, but felt some dried mouth and a little salty (seemed to be from the umami.)

- Shizuoka, Hon.yama, Tôbettô (Yabukita & Ômune) : Really nice, very complex tea. Most costly of their sencha, but never regret paying.

- Amakusa, Kumamoto (Yabukita) kama-iri cha : Bold & tasty. I'm not a big fan of Japanese kama-iri, but this one is quite enjoyable.

- Kagoshima, Kirishima (Asatsuyu) : Also got 10g sample. Distinct green bean taste. Not bad, but not that interesting for me.

Overall I think their sencha are quite nice, definitely above standard. I still have 3 more of their sencha that I haven't opened the bag yet. I might probably post it here once I tried.

One more thing, it seems that their style is subtle umami tea so if any of you who likes bold and yummy umami may need to reconsider. Anyway, I haven't tried their tea from Uji yet.

I appreciate your review TORamarn, but this discussion has been created to talk about http://tea-of-japan.com, not http://www.thes-du-japon.com/! :)

You could post your review here: http://www.teachat.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... ead#unread

I'm having...reservations.

I'm looking for a good but not too expensive matcha (preferably the usucha or koicha type grade) and a houjicha from a vendor I've not tried before. Also looking at a sencha too, just to get a good idea of said vendor's tea.

If I don't buy matabay, I was looking at maiko instead... What do you guys think?

In part, I'm still tempted to buy from here because it *could* be really good but maiko have a proven record...

If you haven't tried Maiko you should

They're one of my favourite Japanese vendors.

Ok, well, whichever I do this month, I'll probably try the other next month.

Having trouble setting up an account with maiko. Keeps telling me my login details are wrong when they're not. Awaiting a reply to my email now...
