Carved stone teapot.

I bought another random pot off trademe again last week, got here today.

I was expecting pottery, as the auction stated pottery, I was surprised to find instead that it was carved stone.

So what tea would you use a stone teapot for? it came as a gift to the previous owner and has an unopened sealed silver foil bag of unknown tea.

I have no idea how old it is, and therefore how old the tea is. From the look of the pot it has never been used.

Size wise the body of the pot is around 60mm around, quite thick walled and mechanically ground/carved using something like a dremel or shaft drill, not by hand with hand tools. I would guess around 75 to 80 mls.

Is this a good pot to brew with or just a display piece to gather dust with?

Looks to be soapstone. I'd open the tea up to see what it Is. Soapstone is supposed to be pretty absorbent, so maybe cooked pu erh?

Thanks, I was thinking soapstone myself, looks too cheap to be Shaoshan stone which I come across googling stone teapots. Shaoshan seems to be a serpentine stone? Jade-ish family of stones?

it has a nice grain on the stone, definitely a sedimentary or metamorphic stone not a igneous one. I'm leaning Metamorphic from the feel and texture.


Opening the tea, from the look and taste and texture, I am leaning there towards a light oolong.

I've got a stone/mineral teapot as well. I think they're fine for almost everything but most of the time I just use it for Oolong. At least mine doesn't affect the taste that much.

As a display piece - well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Would love to see a picture once you got time. I saw two teacups made by the same artist a while ago. Unfortunately it was on a taiwanese auction website and didn't fit my budget.
