Sore throat tea

by EarlGreat » Aug 18th, '15, 21:47

Typically when i have a sore throat i drink licorice root tea with honey and lemon, but licorice root tastes disgusting. Does anyone know of a tea or herb that helps with a sore throat and still tastes good?

Licorice root (gancao) is great for sore throats. I add a stick or two to my herbal brews quite often and it doesn't taste bad, not quite sure why you say that.

Anyway, here's a helpful TCM resource for treating this ailment:

I like Bigelow's "I Love Lemon" for sore throat, despite being mass-market teabag tea available in any supermarket.

For C sinensis, I like Sencha when I'm under the weather. It's supposedly high in Vitamin C.

For me it's sheng pu, preferably spring leaves from the same year, gongfued (5g/~60ml) and in small sips - works miracles - YMMV.

I always keep licorice root around for such things as sore throats...I actually like the taste :) Peppermint is good as well.
But I've found that just about any warm pure tea has a soothing effect on the throat.
I had a cold w/sore throat recently and experienced some relief just drinking my regular, daily oolong and black teas.

Are you looking for something that tastes good or something that heals your sore throat? When I first feel a sore throat coming on I often make a garlic / honey / cayenne pepper tea. As you can imagine, it's not for the faint of heart but it works a good portion of the time :D

One of my herbalism books mentions using cayenne pepper as a gargle for sore throats...I've never tried that myself :)
Apparently it stimulates the body's natural pain killers to numb the throat, which is definitely plausible.

You mentioned honey as well...and my favorite throat lozenges are the ones with honey and herbs. Creates a soothing coating for the throat.
I wonder if straight up honey dissolved in hot water would provide some relief for sore throats.

Honey in hot water helps, but the relief is short lived. The garlic and cayenne definitely add to the healing properties. If you try it, might I suggest you start out with a small amount of cayenne, such as 1/8th of a TSP... mix it all up and sip slowly. That stuff is powerful.

Ah I was just coming down with a cold when this thread started, and today is worst yet! Like the 4th one since Jan, so not fun. Need to try some more remedies...

Not a tea, but Miso broth helps me when ill, I usually keep a tub around. Warm liquids in general seem to help...

Hope you're feeling better today.
I definitely sympathize...I recently had a really nasty cold, not fun at all.

Yeah a nice broth or soup helps a lot.

For a broth Konbu tea, ground sea kelp, is very delicious, lots of umami, and high in beneficial minerals too.

Any herbal tea or soup feel good, but I have never experienced any of those really had "healing effects".

1 white pear sliced, 3-4 slices of ginger, 1 large dried tangerine/orange peel. Boil it all up in 2 cups of water for about 15-20 min. Sip drink immediately after.
