Need a gaiwan
So I need a gaiwan and really wanted to go with a vendor in the states here so I don't have to wait too long. Yunnan sourcing is the only place I know based in USA but their gaiwan choice is nil. Everything seems to be sold out. Suggestions?
Re: Need a gaiwan
Here's a very basic gaiwan from a stateside vendor:

I've purchased some tea and a cha hai from them with no problems.

Re: Need a gaiwan
100 ml seems too small for me when you account for 5+ grams of tea for gong fu brewing. I like all of those just havent found what catches my eye. I prefer the minimalism of a plain gaiwan. I'm willing to pay up to the $30 range for one.
Re: Need a gaiwan
So you would use 5 grams in a 120ml? You can just use 4 grams in a 100ml.PolyhymnianMuse wrote:100 ml seems too small for me when you account for 5+ grams of tea for gong fu brewing. I use 6 grams of leaf in a 100ml gaiwan and it's plenty for up to 3 people
Re: Need a gaiwan
6 grams to 100ml? What types of tea are you brewing?, I suppose you are right though I can just make smaller batches of teaBW85 wrote:So you would use 5 grams in a 120ml? Re: Need a gaiwan
I use 7 grams in my 80ml yixing...
I suppose I like my tea strong. Sometimes I'll use less leaf and just steep it longer, which for some teas works better. But for yancha (and gaoshan, for that matter) I use a lot of leaf with very short steep times. I can taste the flavors changing between steeps more.
Is it your first gaiwan? When I bought my first gaiwan, I figured I'd want something big like 150ml. After getting one and using it a few times, I found that for one person it was too big. I don't drink tea fast, I sip it slowly. So it would take forever to go through a gongfu session because my cha hai would be so full. Now I use a 100ml gaiwan for most teas and the 80ml yixing for yancha.

Re: Need a gaiwan
Not my first gaiwan but you do make good points. A smaller one will prob do better for just myself

Re: Need a gaiwan
Yancha, dancongs, sheng. I usually hover around the 2grams to 30ml of water ratio, more or less depending on the teaPolyhymnianMuse wrote:6 grams to 100ml? Re: Need a gaiwan
I like the above-linked Red Blossom Tea Jingdezhen Summer Gaiwan a lot, it is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely does not feel cheap. Their Spring Gaiwan is thinner. (The matching cups are very nice too…the matching scoop looks interesting, but I feel like it is a bit too narrow for some teas.)
Even if you want something smaller…I’d still get one for more casual use just because it is so nice
I think it’s more like 140 or 150 ml than the described 6 oz.

Re: Need a gaiwan
For me, 60-90 ml is where I like to be for 1-2 people, maybe a little bigger for 3-4.thirst wrote:I like the above-linked Red Blossom Tea Jingdezhen Summer Gaiwan a lot, it is absolutely gorgeous. Definitely does not feel cheap. Their Spring Gaiwan is thinner.
The RB one is decent though, other than being too big (I think the bit about the different shapes for different types of teas is a little pretentious, but the quality is not bad).
Re: Need a gaiwan
Ideally I’d like the RBT gaiwans to be either bigger for drinking out of or a lot smaller for gongfuing, but I really like their quality and aesthetics. If you say they’re decent – I’m really curious what gaiwans you consider to be nicer
