I am selling two lovely tea wares today.

#1 Hakusan Mogake Kyusu (Suffering from firing crack)

I bought a beautiful little kyusu by Hakusan from Toru at ArtisticNippon.com a little while ago. Sadly, the tea leaf sieve has a firing crack. Toru graciously sent me a replacement, so now I have two kyusu! I decided to post the one with the firing crack to see if there is any interest.

Toru communicated to me that he printed out the photos of the firing crack and showed them to Hakusan, who told him that the firing crack does make the sieve less durable, so it may break off at some point. As it is right now, the firing crack is about 145 degrees around the circumference of the ball sieve. I have used the pot a few times, and noticed that tea leaves get stuck more easily in the firing crack.

Price: Negotiable but I would prefer $135 (not including shipping price) since it is a beautiful teapot, regardless of its flaws. Payment via Paypal.

#2 Seigan Blue Hagi Yunomi

I bought this yunomi from Zencha not long ago. It has no flaws, but I am not impressed with the way its looks differ from the advertising. I used this cup a few times, to see if I could grow to like it, but alas our love is not meant to be!

Yes, I am very open to accepting about half. I actually just posted ebay listings for each piece. Give the listings a few days to get some views. If I don't get any bites, we can negotiate a price.

Given both vendor and artist are getting nothing for the pot id be letting it go for free with buyer paying shipping. Seems a little immoral to me. It seems disrespectful of Toru's excellent customer service. I'm sure you didn't mean to do this but id reconsider your stance on this.

I can see how you may think this is fine but with an item such as this in this situation I really don't think it is.

Please don't take offence. I probably make far more poor judgement calls then you. I'm always fine with being pulled up on them.

You'll get more out of situation letting the pot go then you will from the money!

I was thinking the same thing. I mean, Toru sent you another pot because his customer service is fantastic, and he didn't make you send the other one back. So going around and selling it isn't very respectful of that fact, though I'm sure you didn't mean this. But selling it for basically the same price as the new one, after receiving a replacement for free, not sure about that

Usually, a Kyusu with a major flaw ends up on the artisan's pile of other smashed and broken Kyusu. Sometimes one squeaks through. Or perhaps the flaw occurred well after its finish.

What to do with it is a conundrum ...

I have a Motozo kyusu with a "defective screen" which prevents the full empying of the kyusu ... Toru refunded the money paid which I did not want him to do. The Kyusu is still a piece of art which sits on my shelf as a reminder of imperfection and that sometimes an artist places more emphasis upon form versus function.

I have thought about it for a few hours, and asked the advice of my friends. We came up with the following logic: selling the pot is capatalistic but not immoral (unless capitalism is by definition immoral in your opinion!).

Basically, this is not a zero-sum game, which is how you are treating this situation. It is possible in this situation, for everyone to gain something.

I am not stealing from Toru and Hakusan. This pot does not have value for them, because like Chip said, they cannot sell a broken pot because they are professionals. Furthermore, Toru received a replacement from Hakusan.

This pot does not have as much value for me, not just because it is broken, but because I already have the same pot made my Hakusan. This pot would be more valuable to someone else, who doesn't already have one. I could give the pot to a friend who likes it....except I don't actually have any friends who appreciates Japanese pottery. I did offer to give it to them, but they are not very interested, to say the least. Giving the pot to them would make the value of the pot next to nil.

I could give one of you the pot, but then only you would benefit, I would not. I also don't know who I would give the pot to...? I don't know anyone on this website, lol.

Whereas, if I get paid some amount of money for the pot, that gives me the ability to buy more pottery! That would actually benefit the vendor I bought the pottery from. (I am perfectly willing to sell the pot, with a promise, backed up by evidence, that I will spend the money on more pottery from Toru!! )

As for the starting price, I went out of my way to say its negotiable first. I know perfectly well that starting price is too high, but I thought that is they way you are supposed to negotiate? You set a high starting price, someone else sets a low one, in the end there is some sort of compromise. Otherwise, how would be know the actual value of the pot?

So in conclusion, I don't think I am being immoral or disrespectful. I think I am being opportunistic and capatalistic, but I don't see anything wrong with that in this case! It would be wrong if I were hurting Hakusan or Toru, but I don't see how I am doing that.

It's no biggie, you can do what you wish with it. I was just talking mostly about selling the pot for pretty much the same price you bought it for. Sounds like that was just a starting price.

Its all good. I'd personally give it away or just a nominal amount. I wasn't really pouring over my words it was early in the morning....I see "disrespectful and immoral" got zoomed in on. LOL I don't think its right to sell it but I don't think you're a some sort of horrible freak for doing so. You certainly seem like a very nice person. Just a difference of opinion.

Its an interesting subject to touch on though! good to read your thoughts.
