The perfect storage unit for controlling heat & humidity

by Rdeitz » Nov 17th, '15, 20:46

This may be a bit extreme, and pricey, but this seems like the perfect way to store pu erh at your desired heat and humidity level.

Just buy some full size sheet pans to go with it and you're all set! I'm sure there are similar devices that might be a little better or worse depending on how much money one would like to spend. Any takers??

Love it. Probably less expensive than a humidor, too, although less beautiful. If I lived in a an extreme climate I'd consider one or two.

By choosing different settings, you could emulate a Malaysia or Hong Kong climate! Think of the possibilities!

I think it would require using an anti microbial in the water reservoir.

These units are not made to be used continually, though they can probably handle it.

You'd still need something to emulate the smell of those places. Yeah, just imagine the possibilities

You can have that kind of setup for cheaper: take a fridge, add an Aristocrat humidifier with its optional heating module.

Judging by the size of some people's collections, those proof boxes would get filled very easily and possibly needing 2, 3, or 4 more to house them.

I was a baker in another life. We used these type of proof boxes everyday. There is no ventilation aside from heat and humidity controls. I would not feel comfortable leaving my cakes in one for any extended length of time. Am I too paranoid?

One of the things I considered with my puerh storage was how neutral or inert the materials were with regard to odors. I chose natural materials over synthetic to reduce the possibility of unnatural odors affecting the final results.

With $1000 you could purchase an environmental control system and convert a small closet/room/shed into a humidor which could hold much more than this unit. Also, I don't know about this proofer, but when I worked in a pizza shop our proofer always had condensation all over the inside. I definitely wouldn't put tea in one
