My brother in law is an MD interested in alternative medicine. He had a lot to say about pureh to me.
I know it is expensive, but what would the minimum cost be to get a cup of pureh tasting as it should? At this point I just want to try it and see it well represented.
Thanks.
Re: How to start with Pureh?
Where are you located at? I think he is talking about puerh/pu'er. Many different names according to language and minority translation.

Re: How to start with Pureh?
Puerh really isn't all that expensive, if you put the price in context.
Take a 357 gram cake that costs $60. The cost per gram of that cake is $0.16 USD. To make the tea in a small yixing / gaiwan using the gongfu method, I use 6.75 grams in a 100 ml pot. That brings the price per session to $1.14 USD. From a single session of puerh, I can get around 10-15 infusions, adding up to 1 - 1.5 liters of brewed tea. If you want the price per 8 fl oz cup, that price for the same theoretical tea would be around $0.23 USD per cup.
Even if you were to brew it western style, at, say, 3 grams to 8 fl oz, you would come up with a per cup cost of $0.50 USD, and if you steep it twice (I don't know why, the tea brewed this way is too weak) the price drops to $0.25 USD per cup of tea.
Now, $60 USD per cake will get you a puerh tea that is quite nice and usually pretty drinkable. However, there are plenty of other teas that are even cheaper and still very nice. The $20 - $40 USD Yunnan Sourcing productions are all very nice puerh teas for the budget minded.
No matter what tea you purchase, I would highly recommend brewing it in the gongfu method. It is both more cost efficient and produces a better tasting tea, in my humble opinion. Good luck to you if you decide to give puerh try.

Are you looking for new or old stuff? They are quite different.beforewisdom wrote:My brother in law is an MD interested in alternative medicine. He had a lot to say about pureh to me.

Just try a bunch of samples from Yunnan Sourcing. There are many many threads on this topic. Welcome to the world of pu!
My 2 cents...you could do okay with a sample this one:

Re: How to start with Pureh?
I hear you. I have some experience with ordering finer qualities of green tea. I'm aware of the concept of price per cup. I'm just wondering what the minimum I have to pony up is to get a sample of pureh done right so I can get an idea of what it is like.Dylan1117 wrote:Puerh really isn't all that expensive, if you put the price in context.

By entering into this subforum and asking about pu erh based on your brother in law's advise of pu erh as an alternative medicine, you maybe moving into unchartered territory and may not turn back!
If you are planning to drink pu erh as part of the medicinal properties, I think any decently priced ones would be good. But be forewarned, you maybe hooked into getting into all the complexities of tastes and flavours inherent in pu erh and you get hooked!

Absolutely. Specially if you go the raw pu'er way the possibilities are innumerable.HifideliTea wrote:But be forewarned, you maybe hooked into getting into all the complexities of tastes and flavours inherent in pu erh and you get hooked!![]()

“Take some more tea," the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.Rui wrote:Absolutely. "I've had nothing yet," Alice replied in an offended tone, "so I can't take more."
"You mean you can't take less," said the Hatter: "it's very easy to take more than nothing."
"Nobody asked your opinion," said Alice.”

The were out of that and their site didn't make it easy to find samples, so I used their search engine.BioHorn wrote:Are you looking for new or old stuff? They had two different kinds of samples available so I ordered both. About $9 with shipping.
Much better than buying an entire cake just to see if I like this kind of tea or not.

Thank You!
