Unglazed artisan cups

by bagua7 » Jan 24th, '16, 03:08

I'm after something made of non-Yixing clay. I just had the opportunity to attend a tea ceremony; I asked the host about the origin of the tea cups being used and he said: sourced from a local artist based in Miaoli, Taiwan.

The cups were quite large, probably around 100cc or possibly more. Interesting drinking from such large cups.

I was wondering if there is something similar available online.

Cheers :)

Bizen comes to mind. But not from Taiwan.

Talk to any of the TeaWare Artisans here...... many would likely be able to make some for you. (disqualifying myself here)

best,

If Japanese cups are ok then look at the tokoname page on the artistic Nippon site. I've bought cups along with pots and the cups were not unglazed both in and outside.

Yes definitively! I have eyed some bizen chawans over at Etsy which I like. The only problem is that volumes aren't provided in the item descriptions; so how do you figure it out if the seller provides the following measurement:

Size: 12.5cm/4.9 in; 6cm/2.4in

My math is a bit rusty :(

We drink most of all our tea's out of these bowls in the shop. We have them made by a local potter, Izzy at falling Sky ceramics.
They are all glazed as you can see, but they all typically measure around 10.7cm / 4.24in X 6.3cm / 2.5in and hold about 8oz to the rim, although we almost never fill them more than 1/4 to 1/2 full.

Cool, yes that's the kind of tea bowl I am after. These are the ones I have found at etsy (permitting current budget) that I like:

Is there anything to know because my knowledge of Japanese pottery is next to nil. I mean a particular bowl or cup I should purchase bearing in mind what the intended use is for which is Chinese herbal brews.

Cheers!

No need to sweat the math, trying to convert cm dimensions into mL: you can't do it in a straightforward way because the shapes of the cups are not perfect cylinders or cones, and the height includes the base, etc, etc. Just take some of your own cups and a ruler. Simpler and more practical.

Thanks. I got a message from the shop owner and she told me that the gorgeous chawan I was about to purchase (second on the list) holds 420cc to the brim. Too big for travel, can't put that thing in my travel bag and risk breaking it.

So I found this one instead, a yunomi.

Pretty! The spot on the side almost looks like a sunrise coming up on a foggy morning ...
