The famous Fan family

Hello everybody here.

So since I apparently can't post a picture of my teapot because whatever, and I don't have a Photobucket account, I will limit myself to asking this simple question: Who is Fan Shangjing?

After much searching and asking, I was told that is what the stamp on my teapot said, but this person couldn't tell me if this Fan is related to the famous Fan family (paraphrasing).

Any help greatly appreciated.

You don't have to use Photobucket, I host my pics on Imgur if I want to post them. It's pretty simple. Though when I copy the link to this forum, I have to be sure I choose the "Large thumbnail" option instead of full-size, since this forum has a limit.

Anyway I haven't heard of him. You would get less results (or no results) googling his name in Pinyin (the English transcription), so I will see if I can figure out the characters for his name.

Edit: If you can get it figured out, some pics of the seal with the characters visible would be helpful. I think I found the character for his family name Fan (either 范 or 樊) but his given name Shangjing is a bit tougher.

Hi, Katherine. I checked the maker's name, the family is for sure 范 Fan, and surname could be 尚菁 Shangjing, who is not one of famous teapot makers. But the Fan familiy is famous to make teapot, it's not sure, she/he from that family.

Okay, so now that that's done, lol, do any of you lovely folk have an opinion as to who made my teapot? That is, is this Fan part of the famous Fan family?

Not finding any results for 范尚菁 and 宜兴 (Yixing). Perhaps he is a lesser known potter, as there are quite a lot of them producing Yixing teapots. We'll see if any of the users who are more knowledgeable about yixing will know. But I think it is probably just a yixing pot from one of the many yixing artists throughout China.

I think kyarazen is trying to say that the probability is very low: it is quite common that unrelated potters have a similar name.
Another thing to consider is that even if an artisan comes from a well-known family of yixing artisans, this does not automatically increase the value of his pots. For example I have a teapot made by the granddaughter of Pei Shimin, it's a really nice pot but it does not come close to being as valuable as the work of her grandfather

I suspect that if the knowledgeable people here have no idea who this person is, then likely the teapot is of little consequence or value. I only pursued the information because different people who viewed the teapot offered some tantalizing clues re the inscription, name, and style which were worth a little looking into before dropping the whole thing.

Very reasonable I hope somebody can chime in with more information, I am not familiar with this artisan but there are so many things I don't know!
