Daily drinker raw cake

Hi!

I want to buy the 2005 Lao Thong Zhi Yellow next week and was thinking about getting a raw cake too. I don't want to buy samples now because I have a desire to own a sheng cake and I must satisfy it else I will feel this itch forever.
The price where I drew the line is around 30-35 USD without shipping which is around 12,5 USD on YS and less or more elsewhere. If I'm in the wrong price range for a not so special pu-erh for daily drinking then just tell me.

Actaully as long as it's not overly smokey and doesn't taste like pine it's okay for me. For some reason pine tasting tea reminds me of poison. Well, maybe because pine needles contain phenol and it's toxic. Who knows.

I can't say I've tried any of the specific teas youhave linked above. However, I own some of the Wu Kong-wrappered tea you mention (albeit the more expensive offerings). I do also have the 2013 version of the Wu Liang Ye Sheng (purple/wild tea). Purple/wild teas tend to have more of the smoky elements in their flavour profile, although the one you have highlighted has a well balanced smokiness to my taste (the '13 that is). If you don't like the pine flavour then I might suggest you go for more aged tea as you have opined above. In terms of value, might I suggest:

It has some smoky elements which again are not overpowering, but for the price point you could definitely do a lot worse. Strictly speaking, it's not a 'bing' (cake) but it has about 2/3 the volume of a standard cake so will keep you going for a while.

The Yunnan Sourcing 'impression' cakes might also be up your ally as they are blended to be suitable for drinking now or into the future (and well within your budget). Go ahead and buy a cake or two with the wukong wrapper if you're drawn to them and forget about them for a few years and I'm sure they will be thoroughly enjoyed at a later stage.

Nice to see this topic, I was looking for a daily drinker as well, I'm thinking of ordering from pu-erh.sk, want to sample a few of their teas but I could use a full affordable cake to drink regularly, ideally with some age, found these:

Couldn't agree with you more. Go with your instincts and treat it all as a journey. There is no good and bad tea, just tea! The only way to know what you like (which is more important than the opinion of others) is to taste a bunch of different tea and start refining your own tastes. Dive in head first and don't look back!

Seconded. I have 5 of those cakes in storage and this stuff just keeps changing and changing. Pretty amazing, especially for the money.
For the fans of Xiaguan tuos, especially the 2012 Te Ji FT#6 this one is an interesting alternative with a similar taste profile, less smokiness but beautiful, calming qi and equally hard to beat price wise:

Another raw sheng that easily beats much more expensive teas IMO is the 2013 Mengku Spring Tips but unfortunately Scott ran out of stock.
Yet another decent, affordable sheng would be the 2013 Ai Lao, unfortunately the price went up to $39 a while ago.

I like that Hai Lang, I wanted to try a YiWu thus I could beat 2 flies with one slap (okay this sounds better in hungarian ). Greenteaguru is actually cheaper for me, shipping is only 5 GBP and delivery time is significantly lower. I don't think I'd choose the Nan Jian cake if it's similar to Xiaguan. I just ordered a 2006 Te Ji last week from Berylleb.
If there's a sale till next week then I might pick up the Ai Lao.

I didn't know prices could go up so fast. Last year I bought the 2006 Te Ji for 9 USD I think, now it's around 15. The 2012 Menghai Hong Yun mini cake was less than 9 USD not long ago, now it doubled its price. Tea seems to be a good investment, except for me 'cause I drink everything. I drank the 2016 Nan Zhao too which should have been left to age.

But yeah the prices tend to fluctuate a bit more these days but overall prices tend to increase a bit on whatever's popular.
