I bought this pot; it will be my first Yixing. I was planning to dedicate it to Yancha & roasted oolongs, but what do you think? Is that a good match for this clay & shape, or would something else be more appropriate?
Re: First Yixing
Welcome to the forum and to the addictive world of Yixing!
That seller has some nice quality starter pots. At 140ml I'd say it's kind of big for yancha, unless you plan on regularly brewing for 4 people or so. My 1-2 person yancha pots are both around 60ml. Could be a nice fit for roasted Taiwanese oolongs, or cooked puerh.

Re: First Yixing
Not a bad teapot in order to start your journey into the Yixing world!
At 140 ml it can be big, but most of us started using such big teapots during the prehistorical era!
I suggest you to try that particular teapot with as many different teas as possibile, so you will start appreciating the difference between a good pair and a bad pair; last but not least, enjoy your purchase!

Congrats on your first Yixing, and welcome to TeaChat! Don't forget to leave a post over on "Introduce Yourself" so we can get to know you little betterabnyc wrote: http://www.ebay.com/itm/authentic-Chine ... Sw2xRYTUXk

Based on the size, clay, and shape I'd suggest aged puerhabnyc wrote: [url]I was planning to dedicate it to Yancha & roasted oolongs, but what do you think? Is that a good match for this clay & shape, or would something else be more appropriate?

Re: First Yixing
Shu also works, I drink it very rarely so I did not mention it.abnyc wrote: Aged sheng? Tingjunkie above suggests shou.
Re: First Yixing
I would guess the clay would work for shou, aged sheng, aged liu an, liu bao, roasted oolongs, etc... BUT at 140 ml you're going to be spending some serious money to fill it with aged sheng or good yancha. That's why I recommended the teas that I did. Good possible fits for the teapot that won't cost an arm and a leg.
Re: First Yixing
I noticed that teapot before on the ebay site. I like the esthetic.
I have an "aged zini" teapot from the same vendor. Different maker so probably not the same clay. It works well for shu pu er (an undemanding tea.) That pot acquired a quick patina!

I'd say it depends on your preferences, especially the water/leaf ratio. Like some other folks here I prefer my oolongs, and sheng pus gongfued and a bit stronger (5g/60ml) and rarely use any vessel larger than 80ml for them. I have a good number of larger pots (up to 200ml) as well but since I gongfu almost anything I mainly use them for Himalayan, red and white teas, sometimes for green teas, greener oolongs or when I have guests - YMMV.abnyc wrote: http://www.ebay.com/itm/authentic-Chine ... Happy experimenting with your new pot!

That's a fair point, everyone. Especially if the yancha I buy in the future gets pricier (still exploring around $15-20/50g) I'll appreciate a smaller size.kuánglóng wrote:I'd say it depends on your preferences, especially the water/leaf ratio. I like your idea about Himalayan. Maybe this is a Darjeeling pot...
Re: First Yixing
Any opinions on which of these would be better suited to yancha? They both come in the slightly smaller 65ml size as well.

I'd either ask Honza (the owner, he knows his stuff pretty well) or get both pots and find it out myselfabnyc wrote: Any opinions on which of these would be better suited to yancha? They both come in the slightly smaller 65ml size as well.

To me, the second pot looks like much better clay. 65ml is better for yancha for 1-2 people.abnyc wrote: Any opinions on which of these would be better suited to yancha? They both come in the slightly smaller 65ml size as well.

Interesting, I emailed Honza, and he seems to prefer the clay of the darker pot.tingjunkie wrote:To me, the second pot looks like much better clay. 65ml is better for yancha for 1-2 people.abnyc wrote: Any opinions on which of these would be better suited to yancha?
