I'd just like to point out that ramen is not Japanese, but Chinese. It is very popular in Japan, but then so is McDonald's.... :D

Loose teas! I was introduced to Assam in high school by a friend's father who was from New Delhi. He got regular shipments of tea from relatives who had remained in India and I was fortunate to have been able to try many of them. They were absolutely amazing! I stopped buying tea bags and only bought loose tea from then on. I could only afford "cheap" tea from places like Cost Plus (original store in San Francisco!) but it was still much better than any grocery store bagged tea.
