My new tetsubin!! I got a fews questions

I just bought a kunzan tetsubin, oni arare 1.8 liters that seem to be popular on this site.

Mine don’t have a hollow handle according to hojo.

But I wonder if it made using a clay mold?

And if it is all handmade or half hand made half industrial.

Plus, it had rust spot in it even before I start using it, is it normal? Will the rust got all the way tru and make a hole??

Pretty much all tetsubins are made with molds. The molds for high-end tetsubins are made by hand. Kunzan makes their clay molds by hand, but uses them couple times before discarding the mold. The molds for the most high-end tetsubins are used only once, which shows in the price. Industrial production uses dry or sand molds.

However with Oni-Arare pattern the mold may be used only once, because it can destroy or damage the mold. So your Kunzan is fully handmade.

The rust spots are normal. As long as you dry the tetsubin properly after each use there will be no problem so enjoy using it! If you want you can boil some green tea leaves in it as they help you to get rid of the rust.
