new and in need of help

by ruse » Jun 14th, '18, 16:20

ok, i am not a tea drinker...yet.
i've tried a number of teas and they often are just too watery tasting and/or too bitter. i'm trying to get away from drinking soda and i'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to point me in the direction of a tea that will be my magic ticket.
here's what i'm looking for in a good tea:
-lots of flavor. i hate the watery taste that many have.
-sweet flavor. i have a serious sweet tooth and swapping from soda is going to be difficult.
-at least a mild amount of caffeine (moderate would be preferable, but i could stand to cut down a little, i suppose)
is there a magical tea out there that will fill my cup?
thanks in advance for any help.

Puerh can have some of those notes. The older sheng can have the sweet and the younger shou can have some of the bittersweet chocolate at times. Not a magical tea but read some reviews and see what you think.

Hello!
My first recommendation would be Lapsang Souchong. This is a black tea that has a very smokey flavor, as it is smoked over a pine fire.

The word "Souchong" is named after one of the leaves on the tea plant, which is rather large and further down on the plant. These leaves typically have less bold flavor than the ones higher up, and as such tend to have somewhat of a sweeter flavor to them, at the sacrifice of being less flavorful. However, because this particular tea is smoked over a pine fire, it has a strong flavor of clean smokiness to it that helps give it a strong flavor.

Another recommendation I have is Autumn Flush Darjeeling (flush refers to the time of the year the leaves are plucked. Darjeeling is the only tea that I know of that goes by this system). While Darjeeling is not known for being a sweet tea, the darjeeling leaves plucked in autumn have had lots of rain, and (to me at least) always seem to be sweeter, having a bit more of a bold flavor to them that reminds me a bit of maple syrup.

Both of these are black teas. I do not know where they stand caffeine-wise in relation to other teas, but black teas typically contain more caffeine than other teas.

If you have any questions, feel free to let me know!
