Is this Japanese Teaware?

by Dirk576 » Jun 14th 18 10:54 pm

I found this listed as a sake set but I really haven’t been able to identify it. Any help would be appreciated.Image

Hello!
I'll try looking into this to find out more about this. As of now, I don't have much exposure to Sake sets, but I'll do some research.
Did you find this online? If so, would you happen to have a link to it?

I bought the set at an auction and the only information listed was “8 piece Marble Saki Set - Set is tan/gold with multi-color flecks, consists of 6 cups, tray and decanter”. If you count the small lid to the decanter, it’s a 9 piece set. I’m just not sure if it’s a sake set or a tea set or if it’s Japanese.

Hello,

It is definitely a sake set.
The tall decanter is called a "tokkuri," and its shape is "hisago."
Culturally, it is definitely Japanese but I do not know if it was made in Japan. Typically, Japanese kilns deal with making various styles of pottery using ceramics. I haven't really seen any sake or tea-ware made in Japan using marble. Also, Japanese tea and sake-ware typically have a stamp on the bottom of their pieces that serves as the signature of the person or kiln that made it. If it doesn't have that, it may not have been made in japan.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I hope that answered what you were looking for!
