Dancong in Tokoname?

by WuWeiLong » Apr 29th, '19, 17:24

Hi all. I have been searching for a chaozhou For Dancong for many months. I need a small pot (around 60ml) with a large lid opening and low profile. Yet every time I find a pot small enough it just does not excite me.

It seems that they are not made well, compared to other regions clay ware. I can never find a pot with a fast pour, or a multi hole ball filter.

I have seen some lovely tokoname clay pots that fit all my criteria. Even the wall thickness seems perfect for Dancong. I’m just worried the clay will not match somehow.

Does anyone have any experience using tokoname clay with dancong? Or does anyone have any thoughts as to what I should do in this situation? Thank you.

You will find an interesting fairly long video/comment on experiment by MeiLeaf on YouTube, comparing Yixing (zini only I think), Jianshui, Chaozhou, and Tokoname. Hope it could help (I have tested many too, but nothing conclusive)

Chaozhou pots if you can find a good quality one, is very good for DC obviously.
Zhuni if you can get/afford it in high genuine quality.
For Tokoname, try Hokujo, or for greener DC Kobiwako clay from Hojo.

I personally really dislike CZ clay for anything but high roast oolongs. A lot of traditional Teochew dancong drinking families drink higher oxidation and higher roast DC than the broader market is chasing today. I think Tokoname would be a superior choice! I personally prefer porcelain for dancong, and I load my gaiwan to the top with dry leaf! I start with a flash infusion after a flash rinse, and increase each infusion by five seconds until I've had enough!
