Utilitea- Flames just came out the side

by TeaFanatic » Apr 26th, '07, 00:48

So I went to turn on my utilitea and flames can out the side (where the temperature adjusting knob is), the utilitea still works fine, but has anyone ever had this happen to them?

I wish I had some pics of the incident, unfortunately the flame only appeared for about 2 seconds and then it was gone. It came with a big popping sound, but my water still heats up fine. I'm really not that worried about it, I just didn't know if anyone experienced anything similar.

haha, dude, popping+flames is really not a good thing..your water may still heat up but that could go "pop" one more time in your kitchten and blow away part of your counter and/or cabinets..and trust me..coming from a guy with white cabinetes and countertops, scorch marks are a real pain in the ol arse to wipe away...or wine stains for that matter, those weren't fun, merlot is better in the mouth, not on the counter...and then there were the tea stains, the sauce from the spaghetti wasn't to much of a hoot...heh, then ther was that green stain which i still can't identify, im thinking it was the remininscent of a jello shot but i cant honestly say...heh, then the paintballs, the diffuser oil that sat for a week before i noticed it, the spot where my incense always burn left a funny shadow like imprint....then there was the bird oil stain frm when trey picked up the turkey at thanksgiving and made him walk across the countertops =]

Ah, and all of it cleaned without my mom ever knowing..with the exception of the turkey...she knew about tat.

Seriously...fire hazard.

Known fire hazard + underpaid claims adjuster = no money to fix formerly pretty kitchen.

It does just sound like a mild electrical short though. A small appliance repairman (excuse me, repairperson) should be able to fix it without much of a problem. In fact, the problem will be in finding the small appliance repairman...

If its not that old you may want to contact adagio, otherwise just replace it (better to pay $50 now than $x later to replace everything that it will burn down). Are you sure you didn't get water in the base or anything? Other than that I would just chalk it up to aging electronic parts.

I bet I did just get water in the base. I'm at college, so I have to set it in the sink to get it under the faucet, so I probably just did get some water in there.

Mmm...college. Perennial brokeness.

You know, while I was at school one of my sorority sisters burnt down an entire dorm building because she inadvertently soaked an electrical appliance. (I suppose it was for the best in the long run...it was a 100+ year old building and they replaced it with a much more attractive suite complex...but still. Not good.) Save yourself some trouble and go buy a cheap pitcher. :)

I have a water filter for my tea water, but I just had to quickly get some water for some ramen, and I didn't want to waste filtered water, so that's why I used the sink.

TeaFanatic -- I hope you've chucked out the UtiliTea. It's just not worth it.
In regard to tea or wine stains: Mr Clean Magic Eraser. When we moved out of a rental several years ago the Magic Eraser got all of the coffee/s'ghetti/tea stains from the countertops.
