Making Your Own Tea Bags with Loose Tea

by TimeforTea » Feb 13th, '08, 22:54

Hi!

I purchased adagio's box of tea bag recently to make my own tea bags from loose tea leaves. However, there is no way to close the top of the bag.

To those of you who make your own tea bags, are you using adagio's tea bags? If you are, how do you carry them without the tea leaves falling out? If you're not, which bags are you using?

As always, thanks in advance. :)

I know that some vendors sell a clip for the make your own teabags, it's basically like a bar clip (imagine a small chip bag clip) attached to a chain to a smaller clip to clip to your mug/cup/etc. They aren't really disposable though, but I hear they work nicely.

The bags I use have a folding pouchlike thing that I totally missed the first few times I used em. Sort of like some pillow cases have. I just looked at the adagio ones and it looks like they don't, that you are supposed to hang them over the side of the cup to keep the leaves in. hmnn, not for me.

I got mine at my local Asian store - http://www.uwajimaya.com/

I got some of the Adagio bags and think they work well. They're tall enough that they really don't need to be secured closed. Just fold the top in (not out, or it will siphon tea out of the cup) and it should be just fine. I've not had one spill out tea yet.

Honestly I think the best ones I have found are from TeaCuppa.
The are nicer than the paper ones and they have a foldover top that closes well; like the ones tenuki described.

I have the Adagio teabags and use them for when I make tea in the ceramic teapot I have. Like others have said, you need to fold the long end of it over the edge of your teacup/teapot. If you want to take them somewhere you'll need a container like a ziploc or empty Altoids tin like Chip said. :P

Yup, that looks like exactly what I have (slightly different brand, same packaging). I would recommend getting the largest size possible within reason.

I love this idea. An Altoid tin is the perfect size and it'll keep light out, too, unlike a ziplock. Perfecto!! :D

Thx! Will be sure to fold the top "in" next time instead of "out". :P

This sounds like what I'll get for next time. Even though I've read it's necessary to buy tea bags with enough room for the tea leaves to expand, should I still get the largest size even if this will be for just 1-2 cups?

I'm assuming it is okay to resteep tea leaves in a bag just like we can resteep loose tea leaves...

No you don't need the big size, but since you are ordering, I would get both.
The big size is nice for small pots. And tea baths. :D

The smaller size will work just fine, I use it for my oolongs and they really expand, and still there is room. And yes you can resteep, no problem. I just try to make sure I do it within a reasonalble amount of time. For example I would never go over 6 hours. Probably best under 4, but that's my own opinion.

I picked up these tea filters from Whole foods, I can't remember the brand at the moment. They are taller than my biggest cup of tea and just the right size for my travel mug. The opening is higher up so that there is no chance of escaping leaves. Maybe something like that would work better for you?
