Saturday!!! TeaDay!!!!! 3/22/08

by Chip » Mar 22nd, '08, 03:29

Ahhh, SATURDAY!!! Let's drink serious TEA!!! The more the merrier.

Welcome everyone to TeaDay. What is in your cup(s) today, please share with us. Stop by throughout the day and give us updates! Also, spend some time here and see what everyone else is sipping today.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic is once again another variation of the last two days, Today, it is YERBE MATE's turn. So, have you had the yerbe in a gourd through your own bombilla, sounds pretty interesting to me. Share with everyone your Yerbe experience or lack there of.

See you all on TeaDay!!!

I voted "Other" because I haven't tried it,
and it's not on my list either.

What is it anyway? Some kind of malt brew?

I love the stuff, but don't go through the trouble of using the gourd and bombilla. I find that a Tbs. of Mate in a T-sac works out perfectly in a 16 oz. mug with a steep of 8 mins.

I was just chatting with insanity about the stuff shortly ago. Chip must've felt a disturbance in the gourd in choosing this topic.

I love me a good yerba mate session, and stick to my guns that if you haven't tried it in the traditional way, you probably haven't really had a chance to *get* it. I don't mean that in a pejorative sense, but it's different.

I fill my gourd 1/2 to 2/3 full of leaf (although depending on variety there may be stem and other bits), shake vigorously, pour a bit of cool water into the bottom with the bombilla (something of a filtered straw), then begin a series of "green tea temp" rapid infusions.

Following this method, yerba mate is not something you have to steep for a few minutes, measure in grams, or deal with in any sort of precise way.

Herb and bombilla go in the gourd, then repeatedly pour and sip until satisfied.

Attempts to brew yerba mate with Western tea brewing methods can produce some truly vile concoctions. In a pinch, though, at least some brands can be handled in a manner similar to sencha with what I consider satisfactory results.

I would like to tell you that in my foot journey across Brasil, I drank it daily as the natives drink it.

But unfortunately, that would be a lie. My only try of Yerbe was I guess roasted yerbe with black tea in Celestial Seasoning Teabags around 10 years ago. The stuff is called Morning Thunder, aptly named. My only recollection of the experience was the incredible caffeine rush I had...I was not a tea drinker per se back then.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

It's from a holly bush, believe it or not.

They have a lot of different flavors to go along with "natural". I'll send some along to you in your box when I get it all together.

Finishing up an email to you now...

I've tried it twice, once when I was in Argentina and once when an Argentine exchange student stayed at our house. I was more interested in the straw thingy than the drink itself, though.

I've actually got a gourd somewhere around here, I think....

I chose other because I don't know much about it.
This morning I had citron green in my cup.

tea day

by Ron Gilmour » Mar 22nd, '08, 11:15

I tried mate once. It gave me a really unpleasant caffeine rush that I don't get from tea, so I've never tried it again.

This morning I had my first ever cup of pu-er. Not bad, but I don't think I'm going to become a regular pu-er drinker. The smell is kind of hard to get past. After about half a cup I brewed up a cup of nice normal Assam to recover.

the past month or so i have been drinking it western style and i think i am missing out on the experience. all the mate is hit with water at once so it's not a gradual thing like with a gourd

after my chat with padre this morning! i think i am going to order a plain gourd for $4 and bamboo straws. i'm gonna get a bamboo bombilla because the thought of drinking out of metal doesn't appeal to me. not to mention the possible health risks
