Good place to find (relatively) cheap teacups?

by ngower » Mar 24th, '08, 17:15

I'm fairly new to the gourmet tea world, got the IngenuiTEA with the Black Tea sampler and enjoyed it. I just made a purchase of some new teas as I've almost gone through what I've got now, maybe a week left of use. I'm drinking out of some pretty old teacups I had from a while back, but would really like a new cup. The glass mug on Adagio is nice, but I'm hearing it's fragile.

So to end my all too long post, can anyone recommend a site (that isn't ebay, unless you're going to a store on ebay) where I could find some good teacup(s) for $15-$20 max?

That's a huge question of what kind of a cup do you like? There are oh so many types and styles of teacups and materials.

Stoneware vs. Ceramic vs. Glass vs. Other
English style vs. asian styles
even within those styles there are a plethora of sub styles

What would your ideal cup look like?

I have the Adagio mug and I wouldn't call it fragile. It is glass of course, but not really fragile in my opinion. No more then any other drinking glass. I have 4 and I have broken one over the 3 years I have had them. They fit perfeclty with the ingenuiTEA and I love seeing the color or the tea.

I'm sure you will get lots of recommendations here, but I'm a glass girl, it's just what I personally prefer.
:o)

My ideal cup is very similar to that of a coffee mug. The glass one on Adagio seems perfect, just the reviews there were a bit worrisome.

How does it deal with temperature? Far too often I end up burning my knuckles when holding the tea, I've got pretty big hands. You know what that means

Hm, most of the sites that I look on for teacups are all asian styles, which in turn tends to mean most of them are lacking in handles.

If you are looking for something with a handle I would look more into the land of coffee cups (assuming you don't feel like getting the one from adagio). Personally I use this one at work.

It was a gift from a friend, and it's double walled so the outsides can't really burn you. Stainless steel so it's not easy to break.

That Amazon cup looks nice, does it leave a metal taste in the tea though?

Not that I notice, but I have never given much care to letting metal come into contact with my tea.

Hit up discounts stores like Marshall's, TJMAXX or even dollar stores. I know the ones my area actually have some pretty nice tea cups and mugs.
