Scale help?

by auggy » Apr 14th, '08, 19:09

I just got my scale in today (actually, I got my scale and 5 extras but in the process of returning the extras to Amazon) and was hoping that y'all could give me some idea of what amount is used for different teas. I know it is ultimately up to my own taste, but I'd like to get a ballpark idea of where to start.

For most Japanese greens I use 4-5 grams per 200 ml. Most Asamushi and a rare fuka I use almost 7 grams.

Chinese greens I use 3-5 grams generally. Most close to 4. Per 200 ml.

Blacks...the standard is 2.3 gr per 6 ounces.

Oolong...tough call. For 4 ounce gaiwan I am using 4-5.5 grams...

I hope this helps, Auggy! Be willing to play around based on your tastes. It is fun being able to quantify something that is rather subjective!
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

Did you order six scales?! Or did Amazon just screw up bigtime? Maybe you wanna report "four" extra to them and send me one. ;)

 No, I just ordered one and instead of one scale that sent me one box of scales! I did hope they'd just let me keep them but at 15 bucks each, they aren't. Darn it! :D

Chip, thanks for the info on what you use. I'm definitely looking forward to being more consistent in my tea making!

Which scale did you order? I'm probably going to order this scale soon. It was in stock a week ago but now it's gone - did you receive their whole supply!?

Doesn't everyone buy the 400Z? TeaChatters should get a discount on that thing.

That's the exact one, actually. And yes, I think their supply is currently sitting on my kitchen table.

Well, I suppose I did. 6 for the price of 1?

But I'm being a good girl and returning 5.

I'll have to order one once they receive your supply again! Means they'll only have 5 in stock, I'll have to move quickly! Now I now to keep an eye on it.

Heh, I ordered that scale last week, and I know mine shipped before it went out of stock.

I wonder if I'll get a box too?

You might just get a box of 6, too.

I wonder if Amazon is curious as to why their stock on that item goes down so quickly....

Im sure there are many suppliers of that scale. If you google it, you will probably find a dozen places you can buy. Though I can't guarantee that all of them will send you six for the price of one!

I wanted to order off of Amazon because I had a few other things to order from them too and buying it all together gets you free shipping. Plus, it's just easier to pay for many items in one place!

I know what you mean. I am contemplating an Amazon order myself.

I just ordered this one from Amazon the other day. $10! Loved the price.

Yeah Chip, thanks for layin' out those weights. I personally don't own a scale but its interesting as a comparison. I was just noticing today as I made my morning Darjeeling (most of the time done in a sleepy stupor) that I've been using a lot less leaf that I would think if I actually looking at what I was doing and comparing to other teas. I guess I'm used to making Japanese tea and oolongs, but yeah, a little black tea goes a long way.
