Can you recommend a scale for use with tea?

by chamekke » May 17th, '08, 11:09

I'm hunting for one that is:

- Precise
- Compact and portable
- Well made
- Ideally, available for purchase via the Internet (because I am in Canada). Many makes/models sold in the U.S.A. are simply not available in stores up here, so if it can be bought online, e.g. on eBay, that's a big bonus.

Now that I've got a digital thermometer and a watch with a second hand  the one thing I'm lacking is a way of measuring the tea itself more precisely. At the moment, it's still guesswork.

Thanks everyone!

I use this one, and I love it.

It's really small and the lid lets me just kinda shove it wherever.

Thank you both for your kind recommendations! Both scales look pretty nice. I'll just have to weigh (har har) both options and make my decision

I was going to buy the 400-Z on Amazon, but a few other teachatters did the same and Amazon made a mistake and sent them an entire box of scales rather than one scale. They returned them but Amazon still says they are out of stock. Hmm..

I've continued to have great difficulty finding suppliers of the recommended scales who are willing to ship to Canada for an affordable price. (Or what I consider affordable anyway  )

Are there any Canadians on this list who know of a good electronic pocket scale that is available in Canada without having to spend $25 or more on the shipping?

I use one of these scales from DealExtreme -- great scale, cheap, and shipping is FREE (though a bit slow).

If you haven't checked out DealExtreme, they've got lots of cool/neat/weird stuff, all of it cheap and some of it surprisingly good quality.

Mmm, I didn't see that recommendation by Dominic T on RFDT. I might have to start paying more attention to those feeds. It would be nice to see him post on his blog a bit more or join us over here.

This really looks like the perfect scale. It avoids all the faults I have found in some. It uses regular AAA batteries instead of those button ones and it goes all the way up to a kilo so you can tare your yixing pot or gaiwan and add the tea. Also handy for calculating the capacity a cup or or gaiwan will hold. The only thing I would also like (but really don't need) is two decimal places. That's just a nerd power trip. Nice write up on your blog, SN. Thanks for the link.

Thanks, SilverNeedles, Towerofdabble, and (in absentia) Dominic T for this valuable info.

Thank you for the DealExtreme recommendation, towerofdabble and silverneedles!

As it happens, I have already ordered an electronic scale through eBay (although I'm still waiting for it to arrive).

If that one doesn't suit, I will certainly pop the $10 and try your recommendation.

Thanks again - very much appreciated :D

You can buy all kinds of scales on Ebay. I just bought another which is very accurate for only 12$ Just put Gram Scale in the search field.
