Chasen Sources and Reviews

by joelbct » Jun 1st, '08, 00:46

To the Matcha heads out there, can anyone recommend Chasen Sources?

I love Ippodo, I would highly recommend them for Matcha, but I am less than thrilled by their 80-Tine Chasen. It looks great, but it has a slightly unpleasant odor when wet, and it lost its shape upon contact with warm water.

O-Cha's Whisk, on the other hand, never lost its shape, and smells sweet.

Does anyone else have any positive or negative reviews of Chasen from other sources?

[EDIT: The Ippodo Chasen seems to have settled into a permanent shape, and lost the off-putting "new-chasen-smell," so I think I am happy with it now. False alarm ;) Happy Whisking!!]

I use two chasen, both made in Japan and both from O-cha: the chasen you already mentioned and the 48-tine chasen for koicha.

I have also for each a whiskeeper (kusenaoshi)

Diaso's 3 dollar chasen works great. It has been seeing heavy use the last two months ( daily from two matcha drinkers ) and is still going strong. It's a little misshapen, but doesn't seem to effect function.
