Help me find this kettle..

by Smells_Familiar » Jun 17th, '08, 08:21

I know of one place to buy an electric kettle of this style with the long spout, but I'd like to learn of more so that I can compare before buying. I've also got a question for anyone that has this style of electric kettle. Is the heating element inside of the kettle or is it on the base unit?

I was going to go for a Bodum total glass kettle (~$50)/ waring single burner (~$50) from amazon to avoid crazy plastic odors/flavors and non-stick coatings found in most electric kettles. If I can find one of the ever-so-popular long spout stainless electric kettles for under $70 with the heating element on the base I'll buy it and save some money.

thanks all!

Is it made in China or made in Taiwan?

Cos for a kettle, made in Taiwan heats faster with less defect..

The heating element is always inside the kettle and not the base unit for this style of kettle.

I believe Imperial Tea Court has an overpriced one... or was it silk road tea? I really can't remember....

Taiwanese ones are more expensive, but my Kamjove worked for more than a year without any issues, so it's not that bad.

I know the Imperial Tea Court does have one. I think I saw one on holy mountain before as well.

The old style ones with a Bakelite base and old style metal toggle switch, kind of army surplus looking, are the best. There are several manufacturers who make almost identical looking kettles. I got one of mine at an Asian supermarket in LA, then returned it because I didn't yet know how where the funky black gunk that sometimes comes in the spout of metal electric kettles was coming from.

If you live near a Ten Ren, a lot of them carry a kettle like this. A good one will (in the US) usually cost about $60-80 - seems overpriced, but as others have said, these ones are better, and last longer than the newer ones of a similar style (on the other hand, at 1/3 or less of the price, you can get 3 new Kamjove kettles for the same price... I also have a Kamjove TP-680 that's been working fine for several years).

This one supposedly has some for sale online (this is the exact one that I have):
http://www.tentea.com/electricteapot.html

If you live near one, you can probably bargain the price down to $70 or so.

Thanks everybody for the help!

Just when I thought I'd decided to go with the kettle pictured above from puerhshop.com I discover a glass kettle on amazon that's only $14 shipped. This means I could get the glass kettle and Waring burner (good quality) for $65 shipped from amazon and be totally sure that the kettle won't add anything to the water. But then again the convenience of the electric kettle is very nice, especially in that it has a much finer pour stream than the glass kettle.

Won't you pardon me as I vomit my indecisiveness out for everyone to enjoy..

I admit I'm paranoid about black substance X and what maybe in the weld of these chinese kettles. The puershop kettle does appear to have the bakelite base and toggle switch so I guess that's an indication of good quality from what I've read. I just don't want to even have to wonder about if there's toxic substance leaching into my good water, especially since my 8 year old son will be drinking the water out of the kettle as well. Is that worth forgoing some convenience? I think it is. Have I made up my mind? No. I'm not in a hurry. I'm going to sit on it for a while.

Speaking of safety though. The electric kettles have added benefits such as auto shut off once boiling...or if turned on w/out any water in them. Plus, no exposed heated surphases.

All these are certainly safety benefits as well as convenience.

Just my thoughts.

Anyone ever walk out the room and leave water on the stove only to come back to a hot and very humid kitchen because you forgot all about it? Ever smell super heated metal from a pot boiled dry?

I am too forgetful to have anything that is not watching out for me as well.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

When I was growing up, we would have to replace the back left burner on the stove at least twice a year because my mom would melt her teapot to it. She would buy those enameled pots, and yes they are rated for stovetop, but not when boiled dry on high!

Hmm....so many options. I too am looking for a kettle. I am new at this, and I prefer something simple and inexpensive. I am not too keen on this black gunk Im reading about. Maybe a glass kettle would work for me, but I like the idea of the whistle... So, to get the whistle, do I have to deal with the black gunk?

Suggestions welcomed!

I never knew there was so much to this tea thing! :)

I know this is very low tech compared to other's but this is my favorite type kettle & can be picked up for $10-$15.

Don't get scared off. Tea can be as simple or complicated as you make it! The main thing is that you enjoy.

Most kitchen stores have them available & you also can shop online. Ebay has a few but the shipping is more than the kettle.
