Short rant

by scruffmcgruff » Jul 14th, '08, 00:57

Am I the only one who thinks tenuki is an insufferable ass?

I know some of you like him, and he does do good things for the community (like the monumental oolong box pass), but he just gets me so steamed up with his self-righteousness and needless douchebaggery.

THANX, Scruff!

Hmmm...that word recently came to mind multible times...it seems almost daily lately. I bite my tongue so much that I can't taste my tea.

I do not mind constructive critisism! But....

And the oolong box was actually started by Victoria...he only held it up for 3 weeks with his contributions.

wait, wait, wait, Tenuki isn't in ITD?? I thought we voted him in at some point, or I would have started this rant ages ago. The guy is such a dick.

He was voted in, but he left of his own accord after the whole IM debacle.

No.

Praise be that he chose to leave ITD. Few people in life get under my skin the way he got under mine.

He is a difficult person, and seems to have become more so over time. He was easy to get along with until the whole long issue with Chip about weighing tea.

He often has a valuable point of view, but he can't just state it and move on. And he brings valuable ideas to the table ... like about composition in photography ... but then he makes it all about him and wants to turn it into a master class on Tenuki. I suspect he is pretty ADHD and can't control these behaviors.

I put him up for nomination, so I guess I feel a little responsible, but I find it really difficult to avoid being rude to him. Actually being very direct may be the way to deal with him, but you better be right. He can be killer at marshaling facts and arguments and loves doing so as sport ... I suppose like playing Go or Chess. On balance he does make a contribution. I know more about Taiwanese oolong due to him and I never would have ordered from Floating Leaves without him, though I must say I avoid the IM when I see he is there.

I derived enormous joy in following his argument with BBB about something or other. Tenuki kept defending an error and BBB kept bringing him back to the truth until Tenuki had to admit he was wrong. You could see it hurt him, but he did admit it. I'm not sure if I avoid him or he avoids me, but we aren't much getting along these days. Still I would miss him in his complete absence.

And we are all flawed in one way or another, as this rambling, pointless post goes to show.

I must not be around enough anymore to catch his instances of poor behavior. I saw a few of the comments he made around the chat box thing but that's been it. Honestly, I was looking forward to meeting him when I moved to Seattle, though I think he cited social anxiety as a reason he doesn't meet folks in real life. That could have been another person, though. Can't remember clearly.

Anyhow, I better steer clear of a bad egg. I know this type very, very well after working and operating in a lot of venues that are "intellectually competitive" and there are always two types - the humble, quieter folks who always win, and the braggarts who look like asses and are ultimately humbled at the end of the day.

Maybe he needs his victories on TeaChat to compensate for losses in real life?

His kneejerk mood changes make me think he has some sort of personality disorder, but I see no reason to get uncivil with him. Sometimes the best way to deal with such difficult people is to be as nice to them as possible while you disagree, assuming you can't avoid confrontation in the first place through ignoring or avoiding.

Good advice. I guess you know about more than just tea! You and Chip are the two who have dealt most successfully with him in my estimation.

This thought makes me feel much more kindly toward him. Thanks.

I, for one, am not so bothered.

I work at a rather large company, with a Networking group of 400. I am in a group of the top 12 network architects, who in addition to being the most brilliant minds are a bunch of headcases. Tenuki would fit right in. If we couldn't find a way to deal with each other, we would have failed in our jobs (and been miserable) 2 years ago.

On the topic at hand, we get along well individually and share samples. I certainly recognize the "pompous ass", but I have only managed to invoke this kind of response once -- I didn't take it personally.

I am not saying the rest of you have misjudged one bit, just sharing my own perspective.

EDIT: I can't help but think that a rant would be better directed at people who have done much more damage to the forum. You can probably guess who.

:?: :? :?:

Serves me right for being out of the loop. I hope it isn't me...

I didn't mean to spill my Darjeeling all over the server tower! I swear!
