Okay so I bent the rules a bit. Found a beautiful bowl on Etsy. It's the right shape, a gorgeous rich color, hand turned, all the good stuff. But, it's about 1/2" larger diameter than most of the chawans I've seen. I LOVE it, but... Ms. Matcha expert Chamekke, (or anyone else ftm,) is that little 1/2" as big of a deal with chawan as a too-large pot would be for pu?
Just curious. I'm sure for a rank matcha amateur it makes not a whit of difference, and it's certainly better than the ceramic dog water bowl I've been using.

For actually making matcha it won't matter for a damn. The only time I could think of that it would matter is if you were practicing the actual ceremony and it might be an issue while washing out the pot.

Is that because of the dimensions of the washing vessel? (It that the Mizusashi?)

The specific act I was thinking of is when you rinse out the bowl and hold the chawan with one hand. (hence the deal with the foot, there was a link to something of that nature from her matchaness herself, chamekke) A larger bowl would make it a bit harder to hold in one hand.

Actually, in the hot months it's customary to drink from chawan that are slightly wider and more shallow. I have two chawan that are 5.5" in diameter!
So I'm sure you're OK. If you love it, go for it

I've got a 5.5" (outside diameter) chawan as well. It's actually my favorite matcha bowl.

I compromised. I bought two bowls.

One is 4.7", other is 5.6".
