Thursday TeaDay 9/11/08 Craving other "teas"

by Chip » Sep 11th, '08, 03:13

Welcome everyone to TeaDay. Shall we brew and share what is in our cups today, all day?

Yesterday, the voting was pretty polarized. There are plenty of TeaChatters craving Pu-erh! You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic covers the CRAVE FACTOR for 3 distinctly different "teas." Rooibos, and/or Yerbe Mate, and/or Herbals. Do you crave any of these? What is your personal crave factor for these? For one, two or all three ...

I am once again finding that I crave sharing TeaDay with everyone, bottoms up!

Gyo Glow

by Salsero » Sep 11th, '08, 03:18

I was so excited yesterday when I opened this CHIP SEAL OF APPROVAL mini teapot and cup from Hankook that I had to make gyokuro again immediately and share the photo with you all.
Image

In some lights it has a subtle celadon tint to it, which is missing in this photo … I guess I got too involved in the red cast from a nearby incandescent. Its capacity is only 3.25 oz (92 ml), which is perfect for an intense little gyo session, and it is cute as a bug. Even little piggy had to come out of hibernation to have a look at it and help scoop goodness into it! In this my second gyo session, I noticed what a nice vanilla taste it has. Leaves went into the rice for supper … tasty!

I like Yerba occasionally, but don't crave it. With one exception, I've hated all the Rooibos I've tried, and there's one herbal blend from an E-bay seller I really like but again, crave is a strong word for it. I bought a pound a few months ago so I'm set for awhile...

I crave not these infusions. But I can very occasionally enjoy a brew containing hibiscus leaves, and have had some success with serving such a concoction to guests of the non-tea addict variety.

I don't have great experience with these type of teas but I have never really enjoyed any fruit or herbal infusions which I have consumed. No tea as of yet but might finish off the last of my Long Jing after breakfast. :D

I voted 2, because I'm feeling kindly this morning. Bleah.

I don't usually crave other teas. However, since I've been feeling really sick, I'm craving my home made ginger-lemon-honey tea right about now.

About to be in my cup, my home made ginger-lemon-honey tea. I like how it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside

While I enjoy herbals there's not much craving going on. The exception is when I'm sick and the fruit blends have a certain appeal. Especially in the evenings when it is too late for caffeine. They also make very nice iced tea!

Already had two yunnan gold's today. Need an energy boost!

Great timing on this thread; I just tried rooibos for the first time last night.

Awful. I'll be blogging it soon.

I'm already too caught up in trying the different red, green, oolong, and white teas to try out these "other" teas. I'm looking forward to the day I can afford a mini tea roaster/refresher so I can roast herbs for herbal teas. I have a wonderful book on different herbal tea "receipies" that I hope to actually use some day.

-Enjoying some every-day Da Hong Pao; bold yet goes down smoothly, with heavy fruitiness arising from roasting

I voted 9... just really don't like them... but will confess I haven't tried yerba. I've sworn off all rooibos, just can't enjoy it alone or in a blend. Honeybush is ok, but I would never ever crave it, and will probably end up giving away the sample amounts I have.

Herbals... are sort of drinkable I guess... but really only if mixed with real tea leaves. I like peppermint and spearmint (morrocan mint etc.), don't enjoy chamomile unless I disguise the flavor with something else, and enjoy the Adagio fruity blends but as an accent to tea, not as a replacement.

In my cup this morning was a small 3rd infuion of some 1990 pu from Teamasters received from Abx... very enjoyable and seems to have lots of staying power. Then a 3rd infusion of some tung ting jade from Teavana. Now... a potpourri iced tea containing some adagio oolong #18, some white blueberry, and I'm not sure what else might be in there... was leftover leaves from a few different sessions that all had some life left in them, so they all went in together and made some really delicious iced tea.

Have a great tea day everyone. :)

Sarah

I do enjoy rooibos and herbals. I wouldn't say that I crave them though, I still prefer true teas. I've hated any of the yerba mate I've tried. The taste is weird to me for some reason and I just can't stomach it.
