Saturday TeaDay 10/04/08 Self brew or not?

by Chip » Oct 4th, '08, 02:19

Welcome everyone to Saturday on TeaDay. I hope we can share what is in our cups over and over and over.

Yesterday responders were split right down the middle on the subject "is there enough tea in your life these days?" You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic I am hoping will be interesting. Would you prefer to brew your tea or have someone brew it for you? Are there some grey areas? Please share.

I am looking forward to sharing lots of brews with everyone this TeaDay. Bottoms up!

I picked the gray areas. While I enjoy brewing my own, I also like going to the tearoom and having tea served to me all ready to drink.

I had a really awful evening, and am currently comforting myself with cups of Formosa lapsang. I do love this stuff!

I like to brew my tea but I am quite pleased when someone brews some for me.

I would have to say it depends. Whoever has the most brewing experience with that particular tea should be the one to brew it. I don't really care as much if it were me or another person. Just whoever has more experience.

Granted there is the whole notion of being served this tea though that I would rather have someone serve it for me. Like the notion of pumping gas for yourself. If you could do it yourself or have someone do it for you (assuming equal cost) wouldn't you have someone pump your gas for you? But with tea the notion of an enchanting young lady brewing and serving me a lovely cup of tea and some enchanting conversation puts it to the side of, i'd opt for some of that.

My girlfriend has made tea for me and I realized that teas you've brewed a hundred times yourself may not be as easy for someone else to do well.

So yes, I love having tea brewed for me, if they know what they're doing.

If you insist on having tea brewed by someone less experienced. give them a very forgiving tea.

I prefer to brew the stuff myself, which is in no small part due to the fact that I'm the only one I know who drinks loose leaf tea regularly. To say nothing of loose leaf white tea, the revelation of which can be a great ice breaker and conversation topic in certain situations.

My wife brewed me some fukamushi sencha about a month ago, she followed my parameters and instructions perfectly and I was stunned with how well she brewed it! She had watched me do it loads of time but still I was very impressed! Yunnan Grand Imperial to start the day, have a great weekend everyone! :D

I don't know anyone else around here who can brew like me. People do crazy stuff like oversteep fukamushi.

And that's just wrong.

Same here. There are few places around here that do decent tea. We will not talk about tepid water in a rattling tin and a limp Lipton's teabag.

The places that DO serve tea and do it well are a pleasure., however.

I think my favorite tea experience was my very first trip to England. We were somewhere in London and my husband took me to a very nice hotel to "do" afternoon tea. It cost the earth, but it was so much fun. The tea was perfect and the treats were wonderful. The atmosphere and magic of my first "out of the country" trip certainly added to the enjoyment.
Although my neighbors are all barbarians,
And you, you are a thousand miles away,
There are always two cups on my table.

I often have the attitude, if I want it done right ... plus I am a bit of a control freak ... plus nobody I know irl brews as good as I do (not to sound conceited, it is simply a fact  ). However sharing how to brew properly is something I would like to do.

However, at the end of the day, all things considered, I really enjoy brewing tea as much as I do drinking tea. So, bottom line, I prefer to do the brewing, but in the presence of a master or someone better skilled, I would gladly defer. Or if someone wanted to learn as well.

Started the day in an unusual fashion. I had gyokuro to start the day for the first time ever, after 9 years drinking tea. Interesting way to start the day. Yame Gyokuro from O-Cha, shared with one of 9 geisha living here  . This is partly because I am virtually out of Adagio blacks, my traditional day starter.

Grey area for me. I like to make my own tea; however, most of y'all know how I've wished for a TeaFairy to make tea for me when I'm too tired or don't have time. Maybe one day! I also enjoy going to tearooms & being served. It's a nice escape from routine.

Revisited a former favorite this morning. Organic Monk's Blend was tea of choice w/bfast. It's funny how tastes change. This used to be my favorite black tea until I tried Golden Monkey. It's still a good tea but not as rich & flavorful as GM.

Have a great day! :D
