Monday TeaDay 10/06/08 Sometimes you feel like a nut ...

by Chip » Oct 6th, '08, 00:36

Welcome one and all to TeaDay. I hope we can share what is in our cups today, all day. Let's get brewing!

Yesterday, most responders indictated they would rather not have animated avatars on TeaChat. Other interests besides tea were also discussed. You can vote and discuss yesterday's topics.

However, it is another TeaDay. Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic is a somewhat controversial topic, health, as in many tea drinkers are also health nuts on some level. Are you some kind of health nut, or not? Please share. I hope we get to know each other a little today.

I am definitely looking forward to sharing a healthy cup of tea with everyone on TeaDay. Bottoms up ... to your health.

Not intentionally, but I normally just dislike unhealthy foods. No McDonalds for me.

Currently Drinking 2008 Da Hong Pao Oolong from Yunnan sourcing. Surprisingly, its not too bad. Much better than I had expected it to be anyways.

No way. I do happen to enjoy a variety of healthy foods, but I don't go out of my way to eat healthy.

I try to be as healthy as I can but it is hard to be good when I'm rushing between work and school. I mainly try to eat organic/free range foods whenever I can. My tea habit is about the only thing that I actually manage to follow through on all of the time.

I guess I may be borderline. I try to eat healthy but I'm not fanatic. It's more about making better choices.

Tea however just happens to be a healthier drink I enjoy, but I did not
get into it for health reasons. But now when considering my health, I'm glad
I did.

Sometimes I am very very good, and sometimes I am naughty. (While watching Mad Men tonight I enjoyed some Stilton, which is pretty "bad". But at least I bought it from someone who is known for his low-fat patés.)

On the other hand, I almost never eat meat...

Anyhow, I'm glad that tea is "good". Maybe there's a cholesterol offset going on.

In my cup: some Huang Shan Mao Feng.

Not even close.

Sometimes I don't like the view that tea is for your health. People think because I drink tea that has something to do with anything about my life.

It's good for you, sure, but if I drank it for health I'd just down green tea bags all day.

On a side note; a friend of mine recently said he'd be willing to try some teas until he finds one he likes. I think that's awesome. I'll addict him yet.

When I have a choice I usually take the healthier alternative giving that it doesn't taste like crap, but by no means do I deny myself of the goodies. The wholeness of tea is simply a fortunate side product.

Yunnan golden tips this morning...

I think so sometimes, but really, maybe not. I believe in everything in moderation, including mayonnaise slathered on deep-fried edibles.

I finished all of my gyokuro samples today. 13 all told. The nicest were:

Refined Gyokuro from the illustrious Nagashima Takehisa, winner of one of the 20 grand gold prizes awarded in 2007 by the World Green Tea Association (in which I would normally place little stock). Okumidori varietal. Very nice, cold and warm. High gloss, dark green. Short, straight, narrow needles. Nutty sweet and dry aroma when dry. Vegetal green aroma when steeped. Yellow-green infusion. Very round and balanced throughout, green, salty highlights

A Gyokuro Aracha from the Kyoto legend Morikawa Shigemi. An aracha produced this past spring in the traditional fashion. Gokou varietal. Still rather robust and green, but with developing depth. High gloss. Long, straight needles. Dark green with long, straight vivid green stems. Green-yellow clear infusion. Strong flavor and character. Sweet and seaweed. Good Body. Dry finish.

I'm not really a health nut, but I try to make healthier choices. But I'd say I'm definitely more health conscience when it comes to what my girls eat than maybe what I eat.

**EDIT**

I forgot what's in my cup~ a green tea from the AKHA tribe in Thailand. But for now my cup has been abandoned. I'm not finding but luck as of yet with it. It seems very spinach like. I have switched to a nice tall glass of apple cider, seems like a better pairing for the cider donuts I'm having for breakfast.

If any one has any suggestions with this tea, I'd appreciate it. I started a thread about my experience with it so far~

As a type-II diabetic, I certainly didn't get this way by being a health nut. I watch what I eat in order to allow my medications to do their thing and keep from having body parts fall off or become dysfunctional...I appreciate and enjoy many "health" foods, but I love my pork fat, rare beef, and gooey cheeses...

Anyway, darjeeling in the cup this morning.

Well... I am not a health nut, and I don't drink tea for any health benefit... I just love it. I have a bit of an OCD personality about the things I love, so its fortunate that I love drinking tea instead of vodka.

I do find that I am much more health-conscious about my foods than I was 10 years ago. At one time in my life, I was very overweight... VERY. And now that I am not, I am pretty determined to never go there again. I have some of whatever I want though, and don't really deny myself good things, but tend to concentrate more on the "must-haves"... getting enough veggies, watching my calcium and vitamin D, etc. I find that when I'm making sure to get the "must-haves", I have little room to overindulge in the bad stuff.

Now if I could only learn to love exercise... but alas, I just don't.

In my cup this morning... Malahari Hills Darjeeling 2008.... mmmm.

I try to make some sensible choices, but tea is just because I like it. Despite the health claims for tea, I suspect that one is better off without caffeinated beverages.
The picture today is a Nantou Oolong with a light roast.

Good Morning!
I consider myself a healthnut, but alas not to the extreme. I do not eat redmeat, altho' I occasionally do crave a rare, rare steak. Fish is the staple of my diet, along w/rice and veggies! I rarely eat any type of dessert other than yogurt and limit my drinks to tea, tea, tea, water, pom and cranberry juices and my occasional scotch! I take the time to exercise daily, both at the gym and I run.

I am compulsive, obessive too Sarah, so it is a good thing that I like tea and water so much or I would be drinking way too much scotch!

By the way Sal, I just love your pictures! They always start my day off with a smile! Flowers are another fav of mine so I enjoy them in your compositions. My camera skills would leave you astounded...that is if you have foot fetish or like shoes! :P

In my cup this am, Ali Shan again...just love that tea!
Everyone have a FAB TeaDay!

I consider myself a semi-health nut. I eat healthy stuff on weekdays, but then I usually pig out on weekends. Currently planning to do something about that.
