Teapot Exhibition Gainesville Florida

by Cinnabar Red » Oct 23rd, '08, 14:06

There's a nice teapot exhibition at the University of Florida in Gainesville at the following location:

Through November 14th: International Teapot Exhibition
Grinter Gallery, University of Florida

I think its actually in Grinter Hall.

Its comprised of three large glass cases, so its not huge, but I found it interesting.

On display are yixings, Japanese pots and accessories, american artists, and Taiwanese artists. Many of the artists are highly regarded and famous in the craft.

I didn't know Salsero's house was called Grinter Hall.
***This organic blend is earthy & spicy, with a fragrant aroma & smooth flavor to captivate the senses. Naturally sweetened in the Kentucky sunshine & infused with natural energy. Equally delicious when served piping hot or crisply chilled.***

Sorry to confuse. They are not selling teapots. Its a display of a private collection owned by the head of one of the arts departments.

I should totally go.

We Gainesville area TeaChatters really ought to get together for a cup sometime... Merlion on SW 13th St. does an interesting Singapore-style tea service, if anyone's interested.

I haven't seen the exhibit. The little newspaper notice I saw about it made it look to me like they were fanciful pots by the artist, and nothing of interest to me. Cinnabar Red's description makes it sound very worth going ... maybe even enough so to overcome my fear of venturing onto the campus.

I'm up for a tea gathering. I never even heard of Merlion and didn't know we had anything in town of even passing interest. I'd love to visit them and check it out.

Many of the pots were fanciful, and some not functional. There was a tiny yixing by one of the more famous Taiwanese artisans(Ah Leon) the size of your thumbnail(ok, a big thumbnail) that is funtional. There are some traditional yixings on display as well. Warren MxKenzi, one of the more famous american potters is represented by a couple of Japanese pots which draw on Japanese folk tradition.

I would hate for anyone to go and not enjoy it based on my reaction to the display. Its sort of like recommending a restaurant to a friend, who isn't as enthused about the food as you are.

LOL It's not like I would be traveling from New York to visit the gallery. They'd have to administer electric shocks to people to make anyone really regret stopping by!
