is CCCI good?

by gingkoseto » Oct 31st, '08, 15:39

I got a teapot recently and was surprise to find the chop under lid is not chinese characters but simply "CCCI" and "2003". 2003 I guess is the year 2003. CCCI, I googled it and found a company named CCCI doing whole sale business of yixing pots.

The pot I am having now is a bit odd. Overall the craftsmanship is pretty good. But the surface of the pot is highly polished! I am very inexperienced with the texture of zisha and I had to peek into the pot to see the texture (because the surface is almost shiny polished). The inside looks not bad. And I did more googling and found some saying that for a period of time, many yixing teapots exported from China are polished to please oversea market - I don't know if this is such a case.

So, anybody has experience with teapots labeled with CCCI or yixing teapots with polished surface?

A few of my early pots are CCCI pots. CCCI are all slip cast and of generally low quality, however, if you got one that pours well and has a nice spout handle alignment, then ok. I've had one that poured almost 30 degrees off center and I've heard of one that had no spout hole. If your's has no defects then, I'd say you got a good beginner pot.

Thanks for the information! That's not a good sign. In terms of shape and craftsmanship, this pot has no problem at all and alignment is perfect. I would say it is worth some dollars just being a well-made vase or planter pot :P But if they make other pots of that poor quality (I also notice on their website they have <$10 pots), I wonder what kind of clay materials they generally use. I am somewhat worried the polished surface is camouflage of "unknown" material.
