Tea and the Economy

by TaiPing Hou Kui » Nov 3rd, '08, 00:20

I havent been on the forum in a while, and it is good to be back! I was off doing geologic research in the mountains. Anway, I got to thinking about the Unites States current economic state and was wondering if it has affected your tea habits and your hobby in general at all?

Hey Nick! Nice to see you!

No it hasn't slowed me down one bit.
I'm thinking twice about that new car I want,
but tea - that I can still afford.

:)

No, it didn't change my tea habits. I am happy to own my house which permits me to spend money for my hobbies.

No changes here, in fact I ramped up my tea drinking during this whole economic mess.

On the plus side, gasoline prices are down and can help offset your tea costs :)

And on the further plus side, I've had no desire to go to the harbor and dump boxes of tea into the water. :D

I have someone who comes to clean my house twice a month... a luxury I enjoy VERY much because I hate housework. I always said it would be one of the last luxuries I would give up or cut back on if money got tight.

So, the cleaning lady will get cut before the tea does. I'd rather mop my own floors than go back to Luzianne teabags. Those 2 visits per month would pay for a very decent tea budget! Beyond that, I'd give up some movie channels on cable before I'd change my tea habits... again, it's all about choices. In fact, maybe I'd give up the movie channels BEFORE I'd cut the cleaning lady!

Hopefully nothing gets cut, but it's all about having a plan.

I'm Canadian, so I'm not in the same economic boat as you poor folks in the States, but I don't think we're that much better off up here in the North.

But despite our economy tumbling ever downward, I can't say my tea consumption has gone the same route. That's probably because I don't have any investments or major bills to pay (yet...) and all my money's sitting safe in a bank account, but maybe when I buy a car (in about a week), then I'll start feeling the tea pinch. Until then, though, I'm stocking up on the good stuff!
I believe drinking tea makes me a better artist. But hey, I also believe I'm completely sane.

Sadly, I have found it necessary to give up Starbucks completely.

The nice thing about tea is that is can be about the cheapest luxury out there.

Fortunately my economic situation has not only remained stable, but has actually improved over the last six months. Getting divorced, that's what murdered my tea budget. I've been getting by on charity and samples--which have been greatly appreciated.

TEA AND ECONOMY

by sufrance » Nov 3rd, '08, 22:28

Hi every one, I am sue from Singapore.

I m a newbie here, dun know even how to post a pix.

It's so interesting to read all the tea guru writings here.

I think it's does matter much even if the economy go down, we still must continue to drink our tea. it's about health, rather than luxury issue.
As the Chinese put it..."" Can dun take food for 3 days, Tea is a must for everyday."'

I enjoy brewing chinese tea - gongfu style. I like tea pots and tea accessories.

Hv a good day, enjoy our tea! Best Regards

:)

Hi, Sue, and welcome. Can you post a little about you in the Introduction to TeaChat thread? Don't be too shy to stop by TeaDay each day to say hello, mention what's in your teacup, and answer an entertaining poll ... oh, and most of all to admire my wonderful photo of the day!

The tea itself isn't really that terrible of an expense. I mean sure there are a couple of varieties that can run quite a bit but on average it's less than sodas and other beverages. Cheaper than water unless you have standards too. However teaware - there's a place that will really set me back!

Though no, I've been fairly lucky enough to not have to worry about the economy affecting my tea, and like others I'd surely cut back on luxuries before a necessity..
