Blue dream

by Drax » Nov 12th, '08, 19:34

I really like this blue tea set along with the swirly design.

Any idea what it's really made of? It says "yixing" but... eh? Is it painted/glazed or something? Any ideas?

We sell a pot at work that has a similar marblized look. Whether it's genuine yixing clay or not I can't say for sure, but the patterning seems to come from different colored clays mixed together. The pattern goes all the way through the walls of the pot to the inside.

The blue on the other hand, no idea how they got that.

It looks like the color doesn't go through so its not the same style pot. But if the blue clay is yixing, I don't know how they got it to be blue. And who knows how it will leach into the tea.

That's contained with cobalt or chrome oxide.

In my opinion the amount used is over 0.5%, which is maximum amount allowed to use for yixing. And the clay is not a yixing clay.

So it must have been fired at low temperature, that we can't guarantee the safety of using.

It could be unhealthy or healthy. I don't know.

There is blue "yixing" clay, genuine or not. I probably wouldn't worry about it much, though really I don't know how nice a blue pot would look after being seasoned, so even with health issues aside I don't know how much you'd want to use it. It would certainly be a nice set for decoration, however.
