James Norwood Pratt has nothing on GeekGirl

Does anyone else think this guy is embarrassingly irrelevant? Anyway, some proper photo attribution would be nice.

Oh my!! That's not right! Especially when everything implies that it is your set up.
Wow, I'm in shock!

Not to mention the typos and lackluster storytelling/history lesson.

Thanks for looking out for me. What bothers me most is that it's a commercial site.

All your photos are Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 Generic...but so many people think posting a photo online means it enters public domain :\

Also, it may not be J.N. Pratt who chose and posted the photos; it may be the people who run the site, Michelle & Sandy.

I'd shoot them an email and ask them to remove the photos if you haven't already.

that's what I plan on doing. Really, I don't mind people using my photos as long as they follow the Creative Commons copyright. If someone is using it to promote their commerical venture, I expect to be asked AND compensated. At any rate, the image should be credited and/or linked back to me.

I suspect most of the images on t-ching are stolen. I took a quick look through their site and see a lot of good, unique photography, but not a single photo credit. Not cool.

T-Ching actually had a photo fiasco not too long ago and laid out how they find the majority of their photos: flickr. As long as there is no copyright on the flickr photo, they consider it free game. I don't know if they've extended their photosearch to other hosts, but that's generally how they operate.

I think T-Ching may be hurting for article submissions. I've received a couple e-mails soliciting contributions, which they'd never done in the past. If you want to increase the quality of their content, you can volunteer to be a contributor. It's an easy process, and they'd probably appreciate it. But, yeah...they are commercial.

Not cool, but not surprising for them. That is soooo lame. How hard is it to ask first at the very least when the alternative is to face the wrath and loss of respect of so many internet tea drinkers.

Credit (and comp) should always be given when it is due.

They nicked some of my pics a good few months ago but were quite happy to credit, delete or whatever I asked once I had contacted them.

I'm sure they went through a spate of crediting every photo in an overly obvious manner but that seems to have been forgotten about.

I am disappointed that they seem to be back a square one after the grovelling emails I received.

I posted the following rant on the thread, I have no idea if it will actually pass moderation. I wonder often why I still subscribe to their crappy RSS feed - James Norwood Pratt's retelling of the TGY mythos looks like a joke compared to Brent's own writings on the subject. This guy could put you to sleep after several cups of matcha.

Great pains indeed.

------------------------------------

You may be sure, but the owner of the photos were not asked.

Flickr lists the rights intended for the viewer by the copyright holder of the image. You did not seem to read them. The first photo of the Bodum teapot is posted as “all rights reserved.” That does not give you any right at all to repost the image here.

Next, the photo of the gong fu set is listed with a more liberal license, granting some additional rights to you, the viewer. This “Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.0 Generic” license grants NON-COMMERCIAL entities the right to reuse the image, but gives no rights for modification. It also requires clear attribution to the author/copyright holder, not some obscure web link.

Seeing as T-Ching seems to be in the business of selling things, they are given zero rights to copy this photo without a separate arrangement with the copyright holder.

Please learn a thing or two about copyrights before stealing any more photos.
The online tea community is a small group and this will certainly be noticed.

I also responded, my comment is pending moderation:

"As the owner of one of the photos in this post, I can assure you that I was NOT asked for permission to use this photo. Many of my photos are posted on Flickr under a Creative Commons, NON-COMMERCIAL, Attribution license. I believe this site is Commercial in nature, and clearly there is NO attribution here. Two violations of the licensing, and very poor form, as I am aware that this has been an issue with t-ching in the past."

I'd be willing to bet neither one of our comments make it to approval.
