Mysterious Knife. Any Ideas?

by PolyhymnianMuse » Dec 2nd, '08, 15:50

Alright so my grandfather had given me this knife and i've had it for years and never really used it for anything until i needed a corkscrew for a bottle of wine. I think it might be nice for breaking up pu'erh but thats besides the point. I took a few pictures to show you all what it looks like. The only information I have about this knife is that on the bottom of the blade (which if you can tell is quite worn down) it says "Henry W Mason & Co" and than underneath that I am not sure of a couple letters but the best I can make out it says "Skeffield". Anyone know anything about where this might have come from?

I'm also curious what the long hook type thing is used for in the upper right corner, and furthermore what this knife is actually designed for. Fishing?

If it is a hoof pick, then most likely the Mason refreed to was a 9th calvary regiment officer from NY (Civil War) and the Sheffield (England) refers to the crucible steel the knife was made from.

The knife is a horseman's knife , dunno why I can't get my thoughts all in one response.

After over 20 years full time in the sharpening and tool industry I am about as close to a master cutler as you might find.

Wow, cool information. Do they still make horseman's knives or are they relics of a bygone age?

They probably still make a couple of them. There are still horse riders out there not to mention horse cops who it might be handy for.

Would this knife have belonged to Henry Mason himself, or just someone in his company? I wonder a lot of things about this knife, if it is infact from the person you mention, how many of these knifes were made, for what reason, who was given them, etc.
