Tea Cabinet

by Ghost of Tea » Dec 7th, '05, 09:15

Since I'm a moron and can't remember to log in when I post, I thought I'd drag my question to a new topic.

I have some limited skill at carpentry, and, seeing all those tea shrines, I was thinking about what a good tea organizer for closet or drawer would have in it. How many drawers or sections? Obviously it needs to have room for your Ingenuitea and some teacups. I know teaspoon would need space for her Sugar Shots.

Just thought I'd fish for better ideas.

Ah-ha! That was you. Well, I posted my response in that forum.

What you may also wish to look at is constructing something such as:
This shelf here

The multiple tiers would allow for one to sit their Adagio (or similar) sample tins upon, but still see all of the lables. I know I intend to get something like that shelf once I find a good, proper place for my tea collection.

Can I confess something? I have this secret (well, no longer secret) desire to one day carpent (my own verbed noun) a tea cabinet for myself.

Hmm...very cool stand. I liked the other ones too. Thanks Tad.

Klem, if I come up with a good design, you are welcome to use it.

No problem. :) If I find anything else that could really suit a tea cabinet / shelf, I'll make sure to pass ito n.

Hm, good question (you are seeking to design this tea organizer around teaspoon's needs right?). I'd personally recommend going for a bit of the “spice rack” approach and design it to go around the Adagio tins. Judging from other people's comments and pictures it looks like a good number of people like teaspoon and myself seem to prefer the smaller around 4oz sized Adagio tins, so I'd recommend using that size as the base sample and have a shelf or two to hold around I don't know lets say 8-12 or so of these sized tins in nice little circular groves to hold them in place. Then I'd recommend adding a narrow shelf or two for the purpose or holding the sample sized tine lined up, as well as another shelf to hold one's teapots and other tea supplies such as sugar bowl or should I say Sugar Shots in this case, honey pot, teaspoons, tea infusers and what not. I guess if you really wanted to do things all out add a few drawers on the bottom to hold one's bulk bags of tea, any boxes of teabags and any other tea supplies that one wants to keep out of sight.

Wow, I think I might have gotten carried away a bit but from the sounds of things I wouldn't mind having something like this for myself.

If/when you get yours built please post some pictures for us to see.

That's kinda' like the plan.

The way I'm going to do it is weird, because I want her to be able to use it in her tea drawer at school, but also be able to put it in/on a shelf or closet or something. That means it has to be functional in two directions. I worked out how to do the sugar shots space, but I'm not sure how to do the tins. I want them to be accessible when in both directions. I'll have to sit down and draft it out before I get to work in the shop.

One of the best things about working in a theater though...always lots of space materials, and plenty of tools in the shop.

How about making little 4oz Adagio tin sized portions to place the tins, do you think that would work? That way the tins would be standing up when its placed in an upright position, but on their side with their label facing up so it can be seen when its in a drawer.

Yes...that might work. I think the idea will be to make it such that there is space for a large number of the small tins, and then some larger spaces for the bigger stuff. Plus a "winerack" style bit for the sugar shots. Then a big open place on one side for Ingenuitea and slots for teacups. Plus the top will be flat, so when it's upright it will have a space on top for other things.

A drawer for bulk stuff like tea bags and such is also not a bad idea.

Ok, I was thinking in terms of an overgrown spice rack style around the size of a small bookcase that could either sit on a counter or dorm dresser as well as maybe being mounted to a wall; instead of the drawer organizer that you were thinking about.

Regardless, your idea is causing me to start to “miss” my nice wooden tea chest that I used for years but recently banished to the closet when I discovered Adagio and gave up on teabags so it looks like its only a matter of time before I see about building something along these lines myself. Oh I know after I'm finished with my finals I think I'll see about building a temporary one out of cardboard and duct tape to test my design idea to see how practical it is to use first before putting in any major time and money investments into building a good one out of wood.

i took that picture right after i unpacked all my tea. that is the most organized it has ever been. The shelf, is simple to make, and it works very well for me.

Here is a picture of the tea rack that I made a day ago out of duct tape and cardboard to hold my tea.

Ahhhh, duck tape. Is there anything you can't use it for?

Yes duct tape is not any help if you are unfortunate enough to run out of tea.

I'm sure there is a way for duck tape to help in that situation...I just haven't thought of how yet.
