Need help picking Japanese Green for a Gift.

by toastedtoads » Dec 7th, '08, 09:09

One of my coworkers loves Japanese green teas. He drinks our (Harney's) Ichiban Sencha and Gyokuro constantly. I'd love to get him something really nice (from O-Cha or somewhere similar) but I don't know the best price vs. quality for the amount of money I'd spend on him, whether to get a higher quality sencha or lower quality gyokuro. Probably $25-$30 (before shipping), any suggestions?

I'd suggest Some Sugimoto USA sencha. $14.40 for a single can direct from them (80g) you can get a twin pack of them from amazon for 25.40. Phenomenal sencha.

Since you are considering O-Cha, please consider Yutaka Midori (original). This stuff is da bomb. A less $ is the Chiran Supreme or Fukamushi Supreme.

A little different, the Kabusecha.

Heck, any of the top level sencha from O-Cha are very good, IMHO.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

I second the Yutaka Midori from Ocha....very good indeed.....A sencha that I have right now is made by Fukujen and it comes in a gold package and I got it at the local asian market.....it was produced this last year for some Sencha contest in Japan...it was about 12$ for 50g so a pretty reasonable price......I dont know the specific name of it as it is all in Japanese.......

I would suggest the gift pack made of Yutaka Midori and Miyabi, in plus you get green tea canisters.

I recently bought this set of canisters for 21.30 shipped. I emailed the store a week ago to ask what they were made of and got a reply back that day. It looks like the item description has been updated since then as well.

Please be mindful that I'm very new to the tea culture and my experiences as of now is very limited.

Those canisters are in my future. The ones with the rounded off edges are likely made by the same company and completely seamless.

The price on those are half or less than I have seen elsewhere. You did well, phantom!!!

Thanks! 8)

I've also been looking at these canisters as a cheap alternative WHEN my addiction grows to uncontrollable heights. For the amount of researching I've been doing lately, I'm probably already there and I've yet to receive my tea ware.

Personally I find the seamless canisters to be a bit oddly shaped. I prefer ones in the more traditional style ala most washi tins for aesthetic reasons.

You guys inspired me so much, that about an hour ago I checked out at o-cha, and I bought the gift set for myself, I have made the maths the canisters come as a bonus, I have 6 types of canisters, but only two are satisfying, plus I bought a black water cooler to mach my hohryu teapot.

I like them all, and like the different look of these. This particular one is a nice smaller size. The seamless styling is really nice. BTW, the set icludes 2 of this style and 2 of the more traditional style.
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

Those will work nicely. Many of us have a bunch of similarly styled low cost tins. These are seamless and the "gasket" will keep it really airtight I would think.

I've been looking at these canisters also - are they stackable?
