by generik777 » Dec 20th, '08, 15:43

I want to bring tea with me to work in the morning but have to time to make it so I was hoping to find a thermos that I could put the water in throw it in the microwave and then throw the tea in. Not sure if their is such a thing. Anyways give me your ideas and suggestions. Thanx

DO NOT MICROWAVE you water, it makes it bad tasting, flat, it is the wrong way to do it, please consider buying a Zojirushi water dispenser, that keeps the water warm all the time, you can buy thermos from the same company that is speacially made with tea in mind.

Oni, I'm not sure you would get very good results making tea like that. I would recommend just getting up a little earlier in the morning so you have time to make your tea, by all means by a thermos to take it with you but I've always noticed them to make the tea taste a bit strange!

Yeah i was wondering about heating the water like that. I'll have to look into the water dispensers. Any good experiences with any thermos in particular?

I use this thermos at work:

Obviously, you can't microwave it, but as others have said, microwaving water for tea isn't a great idea anyway. I've had to play around with this one and find the teas that work best for it (you'll want something with larger leaves). It keeps the tea hot for ages.

I just bought a Zoji tuff slim thermos with a non-stick coating on the inside as opposed to straight stainless steel. As far as I can tell, it doesn't change the flavor of the tea.

I just got it last week and have been putting some Nilgiri in it in the morning. I usually break it out mid-afternoon, and it's still hot and seems to taste fine.

I have a Zojirushi thermos that I got for free with my Zoji water dispenser. It was a deal on newegg when I got it, but they don't have it on their site any more. The thermos was the best free gift that I have gotten with a purchase. It keeps tea hot for most of the day. When I was working over the summer, I could make tea in the morning and it would still be hot in the thermos by sometime after lunch.

You are definitely better off not microwaving your water though.

The Zojirushi thermos get very good reviews, as do the Nissan Thermos, which come in three sizes.

I purchased a Zojirushi "Tuff Mug" from Maiko Tea Shop last month. It was on sale for $17 and keeps tea hot for at least a couple of hours, even when using the lower temperature water required for Japanese sencha. However, this is not microwavable but I wouldn't use it that way anyhow.

As time is so critical when you leave in the morning, does your employer have hot water dispensers on their water coolers? If so, you could keep the thermos and tea at work and make it quickly when you arrive each morning.

Hi, all.
I use daily an old fashioned thermos that is glass lined, rather than stainless steel or plastic/nonstick lined, because I thought that probably it would better keep the taste neutral.

It does keep it neutral, but perhaps the others do too, I don't know.

Of course it's very breakable.
