Looking for a handle for this pot

by Consilium » Jan 9th, '09, 16:37

I got this teapot as a gift for christmas. I dont really know what kind of pot this is, but it was claimed to be of Chinese origin. Its made of some wierd glazed clay, and holds maybe 12 oz.

Difficult to see from this picture, but it has a tapering shape on both sides of the wide midline.

As you can see this pot is missing a handle - most likely one of those braided bamboo ones that are so common.

Where can I find something like that short of buying and destroying another teapot? Or would it be easier to just use the old coat-hanger-pot-handle trick used so often these days? (jk of course)

That's a beautiful pot!
It looks a bit like saki pot though. But if it has built in strainer inside the spout, it is a teapot. If it's small enough, you may even grab the "ears" with hands without a handle. But it would be nice to find a blacksmith who can make a pair of brass handle for the pot. However I don't know if there are many blacksmiths these days :P

I would bet you money it had one of these when it was originally sold.

Thanks gingko, and your probably right. I've never heard of a saki pot before, but it makes sense to me knowing what other products this store sold. Regardless, I don't drink much saki so it will remain a teapot coping with an identity crisis.

Its too bad the local blacksmith has taken a vacation or I might have him bang me out a nice handle.

However, Tenuki's link just put the blacksmith out of the handle-making business. Thanks - the speed at which you have been able to find exactly what I needed is frightening, but much appreciated. I'm not sure what the whole boiling water thing is about but I'll read it more carefully once the handle comes in.

Hmm. . . now to decide, oval or horseshoe? Bound or topknot? Maybe I'll get a few just in case. . .

Thanks for the help.
