Where do I start?

by MissT » Jan 15th, '09, 08:56

I've been reading through the site these last few days and have become overwhelmed by what options there are in tea drinking! I never knew there was this other world out there. So, where do I start? I have tea pots, nothing fancy. One with a difuser (not even sure that is what it is properly called). Please, someone take my hand and lead me in a direction because right now I am going in circles contemplating the options! Thanks in advance! :D

Well, what are you drinking now? What seems nice? Maybe you should decide to try one area, like blacks, or whites, or japanese greens, or chinese greens, or light oolong, or dark oolong. Then when you've choosen, we can help you with what teas in the category are good to try. I was in your situation a year ago, now I've tested most stuff out there!

Hi MissT, we have all been overwhelmed by the options available to us. In the west, I think we have more options than even tea producing countries sometimes.

Anyway, it is called an infuser, or infuser basket.

I would start with some samples from a reputable vendor such as Adagio. Try some unflavored, and if you really want to try flavors, try some flavors as well. I would try some blacks, oolongs, greens and whites from Adagio, a nice inexpensive way to get your leaves wet without over ordering too much of a tea you may not care for.

But every journey begins with a first step, enjoy!
blah blah blah SENCHA blah blah blah!!!

What I did when I first started was to find a vendor with a lot of information and good descriptions of the taste and aroma and just picked out some of what sounded best. I actually started with Tao of Tea (www.taooftea.com), which has great descriptions and lots of info (and I think better tea for beginners, though they mostly specialize in black tea, but they have decent representations of most others). I then just picked out a few things from different categories. Later on I had some problems with their service, but others have recently reported that things are better.

The other way to go would just be to get various samplers.

Thank you, I was having a bit of anxiety from all the choices! I will follow your suggestions by picking a category and trying them in samples.
Chip, Thank you, infuser it is. :D
