Is Hei Tie Sha (Black Iron Sand) a kind of YiXing clay?

by babalian » Jan 19th, '09, 21:16

I come across a teapot that is made of Hei Tie Sha (黑铁砂)... I am wondering is it a kind of YiXing clay? If so what kind of tea is it good for and what should the teapot's color/texture normally look like?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Tie Sha (铁砂 - iron sand) is indeed a type of Yixing clay. Hei tie sha would be a dark tie sha, and I imagine should look like this:

As for pairing... Just try everything you'd like to brew and rinse out well in-between. You should notice that it does better with some than others. But you can't always tell how well a pot will do with a tea even after getting initial results. The only guideline I go by is that if it's a dense pot, it won't absorb and round out the flavor as much as a less dense/fluffy one. I'm not sure that's even true, but it hasn't done me wrong yet.

Tie Xing Sha, Tie Xing Ni, Hei Xing Ni, Hei Xing Sha etc, all is called when it contains so much manganese naturally that appears as black dot after firing.

It's very rare clay, most of these clays today are added with manganese particle to look like old time.
