Tuesday TeaDay 1/27/09 Korean tea?

by Chip » Jan 27th, '09, 01:13

Day two of the new year, welcome, please share what is in your cup today.

Yesterday, 85% of responders were going to drink a Chinese tea in honor of the Chinese New Year. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. OK, it is a day late, but as Scruff pointed out yesterday, it was also the Korean New Year, I had no idea. So, have you ever had a Korean tea? If yes, what kind or kinds. If not, would you like to try one? Please share.

I am looking forward to sharing the TeaDay with everyone. Bottoms up.

Did you post a Gaiwan in the Teaware contest?

Yes I have had several Korean teas.

I believe the best one yet, is the one I just bought from Hankook Teas.

And yes, I entered the GAIWAN CONTEST!

I have had two pretty disappointing Korean teas and I have 2 unopened samples of something from Scruff that I think might be Korean teas. They have been sitting in my urgent: taste immediately spot for a few months and I have forgotten what they are.

The below, however, I remember that it is sencha in a magnolia cup with Oriental Magnolia blossoms.

I have never tried Korean tea, as far as I can remember. Perhaps that particular ambition can be fulfilled this very year.

But not today - having my hands full with this sencha for now.

No, but would like to try some. I hear they have some good greens.

No tea yet, but will have some of this Chinese green I have at work with me shortly!

Jack :D

p.s Anyone recommend any Korean vendors?

Wasn't there a pu-erh that was supposed to be from Korea...?

Yesterday I tried a pu-erh that was 50% Lao Ban Zhang, so today I am trying a sample from a supposedly 100% LBZ (although that was recently in debate). The first infusion is pretty tasty, I have to admit. The wet leaves actually remind me a bit of gyokuro, which I was very surprised. Maybe it will change past this first infusion. . .

Actually we got to taste some 'Yellow Tea' at Hankook during the LA trip. It was pleasant but nothing super.

Drinking a Melon Oolong (flavored oolong from Lupicia)

I don't have a Korea tea (except for the mugicha and roasted corn "tea" from Korean store). But we had roasted sliced beef in Korean bbq sauce yesterday!

I said other, I don't remember.... I know I've seen lots of Korean Matcha Teaware... do they make oolong? Or sencha? I guess I don't even know much about Korean Tea...

Drinking some of last year's Megami Sencha to start the day. Have a good one

No, not yet, but I have one or two bookmarked as teas I want to try. Now only if I could find them...

No tea yet this morning. I'm on a self-imposed ice delay for work today so I haven't even brushed my teeth before hitting TC (I got up about 10 minutes ago and have been checking the weather since then).

I believe once upon a time I had 'rice tea' which was touted as Korean tea, however, this poll has peaked my interest. Perhaps someone could direct those of us that are interested to a vendor and Korean Teas :?: oops, duh Hankook, sorry

Or better still, if we have a thread, although I did quickly look and did not see anything.

In my cup this am, matcha, however looks like I will have to reorder soon. Yikes, this stuff is good 8) Sorry for the 'boring' tea report, right now I am really into matcha.

Gotta run, back to check in much later today. Have a FAB TeaDay everyone :!:

Interesting history of tea culture

by Intuit » Jan 27th, '09, 10:25

http://www.ikjournal.com/InvestKoreaWar ... de=4570408

I spent a few days exploring the topic of tea in Korea; the tea ceremony is in the midst of an enthusiastic revival.

Haven't purchased or even come across Korean teas in the past, because the export business is a tiny fraction of total production. There are lots of Korean tisanes and of course, Korean ginseng tea to be found through the Web and in Asian groceries.

High Mountain Formosa Oolong in the cup this morning.
