Help with Teaware

by CDS » Feb 4th, '09, 17:47

My wife purchased this from a local potter, as a gift for me, sometime ago. He said that it was a tea bowl. When I first saw it, I did not know what to think, as I have always used small cups 100cc and lower, so I really had no use for it. She was not very happy when I started using it for a cereal bowl.

Is this some sort of tea bowl for green tea? As you can see. It is Huge. Probably around two cups...

It's a tea cup for Goliath, apparently.

Maybe it's supposed to be like those (novelty?) coffee mugs that are really huge?

Call it the "big gulp," maybe? :D :D :D

It's a bit awkward sized -- not really big enough to be a tea bowl... and the shape is a little strange.

Seems more like a big yunomi than anything else.

Yeah, I am not sure that I ever want to drink that much tea at one time. It does work very well as a cereal bowl, though!

CDS--it is just a large Yunomi.......from what I have read of Japanese "casual tea drinking", (not the seriousness and preciseness of the tea ceremony) just family sitting around on an average night drinking tea.....is that the western idea of having a matching tea set is pretty unheard of.....everyone has their own unique cup......a little girl might have a cup that is only 150ml where as her father might have one that is 300ml......just becuase it is a large yunomi doesent mean you have to fill all the way up with tea.........
Here are a few examples:

*These ones range any where from 9-14 ounces.........my main cup is actually one that could hold about 9.5 ounces up to the rim...but I usually only fill it with about 3-4ounces. Anyway, I hope this gives you some clarification! :)

And then there's the meoto yunomi, the ma and pa or his and hers sets: a large yunomi for the husband, a small one for the wife. My first thought about your bowl is that maybe it could be a matcha bowl, but it doesn't really have the open, chawan shape, though the foot looks OK.

In any event, I'd say you better start drinking some tea out of it pretty darn soon for purposes of marital conciliation!
