Never seen this before

by TeaEye » Feb 6th, '09, 12:16

Yesterday I was tasting a sample of the 2007 "5th Intern'l Aged Puerh Appreciation" Memorial cake from Hou de. I thought it had great complexity and it gave up many infusions.

When I examined the spent leaves I found this pod-like thingy (see picture in Flickr - how do you include within post?). Never saw that before - what is it?

The picture wont come up, the site "has the hiccups" again :?

I have come across the same thing recently in one of my "old tree wild arbor" cakes I picked up - I've never seen them in the plantation stuff. At first I thought it was a stone, but after finding several and looking closer they appeared to be of some organic origin - so seeds I guess?

I think I heard somewhere that the tea-plant seeds are toxic. Anybody know anything about that?

First off, thanks for the compliment Consilium, the nice white socks go well with em dont ya think? LOL

Tea seeds are quite hard to get to germinate, especially because of their hard shell. What I did was put 1 seed in a peat pot about an inch down and put int in a mini plastic greenhouse. I then kept a grow light above it going for 8 hours a day. It took about a month for them to germinate. I planted 6 seeds and got 2 to germinate. Since I had results with this I did not try this other method but I heard it helps germination. If you get a file and carefully file down the shell so its thinner it will germinate quicker. Or if you let the seed soak in water overnight then plant it. I dont know if these methods work or not but you might want to try it.

thanx shogun89, read about cracking the seeds and leaving them overnight in water, i did this with one seed and soaked another without cracking it, none of them germinated.

can't wait to try out your way :D
