by Chip » Feb 19th, '09, 00:29

Happy TeaDay everyone. Please stop by and share what is in your cup throughout the day.

Congrats to Chamekke and Marshaln in the consolation round of the gaiwan contest. Thanks again to all the contestants for sharing with us.

Yesterday's top responses were less the 4 ounces and less than 6 ounces for average steep amounts. You can still vote and discuss yesterday's topic.

Today's TeaPoll and discussion topic. What is your most COMMON FIRST STEEP TIME? Please share some details including for what types of tea you use this steep time.

I am looking forward to sharing TeaDay with everyone, bottoms up.

I voted 3 minutes or less, but the real answer is more complicated.
Morning pots of tea steep first for 3 minutes, but first steep for sencha and white and yellow is 90 seconds and first steep of oolong or pu brewed in a gaiwan is 15 seconds.

Finished yesterday with `old bush' Phoenix oolong from Imperial Tea Court.

Boy, that's a tough one. For some tea the first steep is as-fast-as-possible and for others it is 3 minutes. The ones that start at three minutes obviously don't go as many rounds so they count less in the "most common" measurement than the many infusions that follow an initial short steep, so I am going for 2 minutes or less as a ballpark average.

I voted less than 2 minutes, but it depends on the tea.

The SN I'm having now needed about one minute. And lots of leaf.

With the oolongs I brew, It just needs around 30 seconds to 40 seconds steep time, every steep. (exept the rinse).

Lately, I have been drinking mostly pu-erh and oolongs, which I usually rinse at 20 seconds, and then have a first infusion at anywhere from 15-30 seconds. So I went with < 30 seconds.

Speaking of oolongs, I'm having a Wu Yi Dan Cong from DTH this morning. It's an interesting Dan Cong that I haven't seen mentioned much here, and it's actually my first Dan Cong. I find it extremely interesting, because it's like mango + Da Hong Pao, also a Wu Yi area tea...

4 minutes or less. 4 for the blacks and 3 for the greens. I've been slacking on my shu pu-erh consumption of late but when I brew that Western style, it's about 5-6 minutes. I like a strong, mean cup.

Brewed some Lapsang today...good stuff.

That sounds sooo delicious. (Please, what is DYH?? Still learning the abbr. ;) )

I voted for under 2 minutes- mostly brewing gyokuro and sencha.

For greens usually 2 mins or less, blacks between 3-5 mins (1 minute for Lapsang!)

Drinking the last of my Cha Wang Huang Shan Mao Feng free sample from Teaspring. This is probably my best session with this tea yet, shame it's all gone now! :(

It's DTH and stands for Dragon Tea House http://cgi.ebay.com/Wu-Yi-Dan-Cong-Fuji ... 634.c0.m14

Had a cup of cheap darjeeling this morning to level my taste buds and show them what life could be like.

I choose five or less. I drink a lot of blacks and I steep them for five min, everything else is less than that.

I voted 4 minutes or less, but that depends on whether I'm actually paying attention. :D

I drink a lot of black teas and try to steep 4 minutes or so with just off the boil water...however I do indulge in white and green teas and try to pay more attention.

Just finished the first mug of an estate pekoe -- and it was steep WAY over 4 minutes!! Stout, really stout! :D

I voted 2 minutes or less but that is for non-blacks. Blacks would be more like 4 mins or less. But since I drink more non-black teas, that's what I went with.

This week is dragging since there is so little to do at work. On the up side, I'm about half way done with the tea cozy I started Monday.

Wedding cake tea this morning. An oolong in my purse for later, but I can't remember which one I grabbed.
