Wu Yi Dan Cong

by Drax » Feb 19th, '09, 06:02

So, as I mentioned in the TeaDay thread, I got this Dan Cong from DTH, and it was said to be from Wu Yi.

I haven't seen any discussion about it before (if there has been, please point me to it!). But this is my first Dan Cong. It has a fruity flavor, which I understand is a common trait of the Dan Cong line... but it also has a couple traits of a Da Hong Pao, which I'm wonder if this is so because it is from Wu Yi?

The aroma has a similar smoky/tobacco-y hint to it, and when I taste it, it's like DHP is in the background, with mango in the foreground. It's very interesting....

I will eventually like to try other Dan Congs, but I thought I'd ask to sate my curiosity! :D

It is interesting

Of course Dan Cong just means 'Single Bush' 'Lone Tree' 'Single Grove' or whatever and there is no reason why the term cannot be applied to regions other than Guangdong [if it is true]

I wonder if it has also been processed more like a Fenghuang Oolong [than a regular Wuyi] to bring out the fragrant nature.

Idlu[Gordon?]'s description talks of dried Mango - did you detect this? {edit - yes you did}

If you have not tried Fenghuang DanCong I cannot ask how it compares.
But with the very first infusion (preferably no wash if you dare) can you detect any great fragrance?

Dan Cong from Wu Yi, interestin indeed! But I'm one of those conservatives who prefer my Dan Cong to come from Guandong 8)
The noise comes from the other side of the mirror

Yeah, somebody had posted a list of oolongs recently, including som info on Dan Cong, and "Wu Yi" was not listed there, which was why I was partly surprised to see this Wu Yi Dan Cong...

"Fragrance" to me just means a fancy word for aroma, so, what I smelled initially was something that I more associated with Da Hong Pao. The citrusy/mango-ishness of it wasn't really apparently until the tasting.

For me, it was more like "hey this tastes pretty fruity... oh yeah, I could see how that's like mango." (rather than saying "wow, mango!").

It sounds like a Wuyi that has been made from a single bush but made in a Wuyi-ish style and not a representative intro to the world of [FengHuang] DanCongs
Best wishes from Cheshire
