Coffee Cup Shapes

by cecilebl » Feb 20th, '09, 02:33

Reading a thread on another forum about why Reidel glasses make such a difference in tasting wine got me to thinking...

Does the shape of my coffee cup affect how I taste the coffee? Is there an optimal shape, or different shapes based on the bean?

Maybe you meant to ask about the size and shape of the teacup... The most obvious thing this will change is the appearance of the tea and the delivery of aroma to your nose.

Here are two different posts where you can see the difference in color in the same brew.

Also shorter, broader cups will release both temperature and aroma much faster than a tall, narrow cup of similar thickness and material. In a gong fu set a tall, narrow cup is used to capture the aroma of the tea, while a small, thin walled cup with a flared rim is used for tasting. It allows the tea to cool from boiling to an enjoyable temperature, and makes it easy to slurp tea across your entire palate to maximize the taste.

If you really came here interested in coffee, I suggest this model for your maximum enjoyment:

Any drink that derives part of its flavor profile from scent will be affected by cup/glass shape. Why should tea or coffee be exempt.

As far as the paper cup  IF I have coffee at a coffee shop, I usually try to make time enough so I can sit down and drink it from a ceramic mug. I'm not crazy about cardboard-scented coffee OR tea.
