Budget sencha

by kikkuman » Mar 11th, '09, 03:34

So my friend has been wanting to dip his toes into the world of sencha, but wants to take it slow so he only wants to try cheap good quality stuff.
Usually, he only drinks teabags from local supermarket

I made a short list:
Den's fukamidori
O-cha daily
Hibiki-an's sencha superior
Maikotea miyako
Zencha sencha moe
Mellow Monk choice
Lupicia nara tsukigase

He's tried some den's and ocha's at my place and enjoyed it. He wants to try out some of the other brands but I haven't tried those yet. Any comments on how good those are? Any other sencha you'd add to the list?

Thanks

At least hibiki-an`s sencha superior is ichiban cha, first harvest, o-cha`s daily is second harvest, this explains which is better, anything that is not first harvest doesn`t worth more than 10$. All those lower budget senchas are all machiene picked, so I would try out some fukamushi. Zencha`s sencha moe is later harvest, not as good as first harvest, I would try Kyo no Tsuyu from Maiko, Sencha Superior from hibiki-an, sencha Seiryu from Horaido, and Koto Midori from Marukyu Koyamaen.

Hibiki-an is a good choice, but instead of having 200gr of the superior grade 100g of the premier grade would give you for the same price a better sencha.

of that list i've only tried the Den's, o-cha and Lupicia offerings. Nara Tsukigase though is an outstanding tea. The others just weren't anywhere near on par with it.

I don't deal with much daily sencha so I dont' have anything else to suggest.

I tried O-chas daily and was not impressed at all. I'd cross that off your list.

I think that fukamidori and mellow monk are good choices for cheap, but pretty good tea. Honestly since I started drinking great sencha (Yutaka Midori FTW and Sugimoto USA) everything else tastes weak and lacking any ooomph. For dipping toes those choices are alright. With tea, $10 more dollars will get you far better tea.

Heh yeah, Sugiomoto is definitely on my suggestion list, but well it's just not in the same pricing bracket as he others.

I myself have been looking for a good budget sencha that I can drink every day. I really don't want to spend more than 15 dollars per 1/4 pound on something that I'll drink everyday, but I suppose I will if I have to.

So far I've tried the Mellow Monk and the Sencha Fine from Special Teas. I found the Mellow Monk to be far superior.

I've actually found some decent "budget" senchas at one of my whopping 3 local asian (japanese not chinese) markets. Im not even sure of the brand as most of it was in japanese but the only english labelling said "Sencha Gold" it was about 10 bucks for 100 grams. I actually liked it better then the Den's fuka-midori sample i got.

Partly clear plastic bag, green coloring to it?

That sounds like Maeda-en, which doesn't get much play in this discussion group yet in the budget category I have found it unfinicky and reliable, even if it fails to excite.

What else have you tried in this price range? The Daily Sencha is what it is. I have tried a lot worse costing much more.

This sums things up for me, I could not say it any better, fails to excite!

It seems I have gotten away from this category this past harvest. I used to constantly strive to find jewels in the rough. I guess this year I just figured I might as well really enjoy the 3 teas I have a day instead of struggling with a lot of the lower end offerings.

I got tired of the often mediocre offerings in this price range, often wasting money in an effort to save money ... just didn't make cents, or, sense. 8)

Bingo! If you want to save any money you would have to drink that mediocre tea for the whole year. Even then you are not saving much. Spend the extra $4/100grams and get something way better, cause in the long run it doesn't actually cost much more.

I was thinking about trying Hibiki-an's Sencha Superior as an everyday, but opted out for O-Cha's Chiran.

The best way to get the most out of your money is to brew in smaller amounts. A while ago I dropped down to 6oz from 8oz, and am going to drop down to 5oz soon. The difference between 6 and 5 is not very much , but it gives me 6 or 7 extra sessions! Besides, I'm pretty full after 3 6oz infusions, and I take it to 4 or 5, so I won't miss that 1oz much.

If he has had Den's and O-Cha's Daily, then I would try O-Cha's Chiran.

o-cha daily 10.95 + min 2.00 shipping / 100g

Lupicia Ariake Yutakamidori (listed as Sencha "Ariake" on their site nowdays) $5.50 / 50g -> $11.00 / 100g, capable of free shipping
Lupicia Nara Tsukigase (Sencha "Nara") $6.00 / 50g -> $12.00 / 100g
Chado Tea House Ashikubo Gold $15.15 / 100g capable of free shipping
White Crane Tea Co Midori Sencha $15.00 / 100g Dunno about shipping costs

Those 4 are all better options than the o-cha daily in my opinion. The Nara Tsukigase being my fav. The Ashikubo gold and Midori are both slighly more than the o-cha though.
