New kyusu

by woozl » Mar 12th, '09, 21:21

gearing up for the spring.....
I'm getting some tea ware. Does any one know the difference between
a "swing type" filter and an "obiami" ? Witch one do i want?
“Take some more tea,” the March Hare said to Alice, very earnestly.
“I’ve had nothing yet,” Alice replied in an offended tone: “so I ca’n’t take more.”
“You mean you ca’n’t take less,” said the Hatter: “it’s very easy to take more than nothing.”

Well a swing filter sits just above the bottom of the pot so the leaves can drain completely. Obiami, as I understand it, is when the mesh screen goes around the inside of the pot completely. Also called a 360 degree filter. I'd say it depends on what you're brewing and what you prefer. I own a kyusu with a swing filter and it's sometimes annoying to clean after I brew a deep steamed sencha. Maybe other people can weigh in what the 360 filter is like. Good luck!

I would only get a 360 screen on a kyusu that is glazed on the inside for cleaning purposes. I have one and find it quite acceptable.

I heard basically what Danibob said about the swing type, difficulty cleaning fukamushi type teas from the inside. I like the idea behind this type of filter, but might have some bugs to work out.

Most kyusu have a screen at the base of the spout. Easy to clean and quite easy to use.

It comes with the obiami screen.
Total cost to the US with fast shipping was 54$
I saw a similar pot in a tea shop the other day for 90$
I'll let Y'all know how I like it.

LOL, I think the last thing I would do if I owned a teashop would be to offer Teachat links to customers.

I did not know it was yen.... I love google's converter... very handy. for the record you can drop any unique number in google and get the info.... tracking numbers with no other info will bring up the carrier site with your info for the package etc.

Kyusu has arrived :D
Fast service. Nice piece.
Fixin' to brew me up some sencha.....

Do you guys preheat your pot for sencha?
I have been brewing with an infuser basket and found
the best results were when I did NOT preheat basket or cup.

Interesting ...

I always preheat, then pour the water into a cooling pitcher, pour the leaf into the pot making sure I smell the dry leaf warming in the pot, then when the water is the right temp I pour it into the pot keeping in mind that the water should be a little cooler than if you did not preheat since the temp drop off will be considerable less.

If I am doing this right, the temp will be just about right as I flow through the process.

Most sencha I pour 160* water over the leaf. If I did not preheat, I would likely use water over 170*.

Yeah I guess that is what I'm doing.
I don't use a water cooler, I'm hitting the leaf with 170
in a cool brew vessel.
Do you find brew parameters on sensitive teas vary with
the ambient temp?
I have a cool living space in winter. 10 or 15 F plus in summer.......hmmmm
