shipwrecked teacups

by odarwin » Mar 14th, '09, 11:40

hi guys!

i got a teacup today from a local antique shop...
its a shipwreck cup recovered off the coast of indonesia...
there is little glazing left, but the cup is intact.

90ml

i would like to get your opinions about the teacup being usable for tea?
is there any cause for concern if i use it?
there are lots of cups left in that store and id want to get more if there would be no problems to use... some though have lesser galzing left
i was hoping i could use it as "they say" antique tea ware brews better tea...

i dont really know how to "treat" these shipwrecked cups, but i just washed it with soap and soak it in hot water overnight

I would love to see them?!? :D

Old glazing coming off, sounds like a bit of a cause for concern imho, but I am not an expert. Thing is, you just don't know what was in that old glaze and do you want to injest it?

Also, the exposed porcelain or whatever material it is could also be a cause for concern.

Might be nothing, but then again it could be something ...

The glaze is not flaking off right? You just mean it's been worn away by the water?
If the latter is the case, I think it should be fine. It's a nice looking little cup and cool history. I'd get more. :)

I think I'd gradually warm it up and let it sit in boiled water for a while, not just hot.
